We're winter ready

Gritters Jan 2019

Havering Council’s gritters rolled out for the first time last week, as temperatures dropped below zero.

The fleet treated main routes around the borough with salt to keep Havering moving and help make conditions safe.

The Council’s winter roads maintenance service also has vehicles ready for snow or ice, should it arrive, including a snow plough. While the street cleaning team will do their best to keep pavements and bridges as clear as possible during severe cold weather.

Plans for new village

Proposed plans for a new modern retirement village in South Hornchurch, have been submitted.

The Solar, Serena and Sunrise Courts site will provide 175 new high quality apartments, that will be designed to fully meet the needs and aspirations of local people who are approaching, or who have reached, retirement age.

The development is part of the first phase of Havering Council’s ‘12 Estates’ regeneration joint venture with Wates Residential.

The £1 billion programme is set to deliver around 3,500 high quality homes over the next 12 to 15 years, increasing the amount of Council rented accommodation and more than doubling the number of affordable homes.

Tackling crime together

Crime Summit Romford Nov 2019

This week Havering Council hosted a tri-borough Violent Crime Summit, bringing together key partners and local communities to kick-start an honest conversation about tackling the complex causes of violent crime.

The summit, attended by more than 200 people, took place yesterday (Wednesday) in ATIK Nightclub, Romford.

The summit is the third tri-borough event of its kind. It follows events hosted by Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge councils earlier this year.

Speakers at the summit included Havering’s Chief Executive, Andrew Blake-Herbert, Havering’s Director of Children’s Services, Robert South, Metropolitan Police East Area Borough Commander, Stephen Clayman, Children’s Commissioner for England, Anne Longfield OBE, and Peguy Kato, mother of murdered teenager Champion, who now runs the All Champions Charity to raise awareness of knife crime.

Have you got the bottle?

Water bottles 2019

When you are Christmas shopping, remember there are lots of places now where you can refill a water bottle for free.

Swapping single-use plastic bottles for reusable water bottles is just one way that the Council’s Waste and Recycling team is raising awareness of waste and environmental issues.

Spreading festive cheer

Students at J Defoe Nov 2019

A little bit of festive cheer came early when students from Havering Colleges’ Ardleigh Green campus in Hornchurch took up a week’s work experience at the Jermain Defoe Foundation in Romford.

The Foundation was launched in 2013 by the former England footballer to support homeless and abused children in his family’s home country of St Lucia. Since then the Foundation has expanded to surrounding Caribbean Islands and the UK.

The students spent the week packing Christmas boxes to send to vulnerable children in the Caribbean.
