Lighting up the sky

Christmas Lights switch on in Romford 2017

S Club 3 are headlining Havering Council's Christmas lights switch-on event in Romford Market Place tonight (Thursday 14 November) from 4.30pm.

Other performers include Vocal Juke Box Productions, performing music from The Greatest Showman, along with Charlie Dillon, who featured on The Voice Kids. There’s also a preview of the Queen’s Theatre seasonal pantomime Robin Hood.

The Christmas lights will be switched on by the Mayor of Havering, Councillor Michael Deon Burton, at 6.30pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. The event heralds the start of our bumper package of Christmas activities across the borough set to bring in the crowds.

The event is kindly sponsored by Everyone Active and Romford BID.

  • Residents and shoppers are being given free parking for the Christmas lights switch-on events taking place across the borough over the next few weeks. Parking fees in Council car parks will be suspended from half an hour before the start of the event until the charges start again the following day at 8am.

The Havering Literary Festival continues until Saturday 23 November.

Tom Phillips, the editor of Britain’s leading independent fact-checking organisation, Full Fact, will be discussing his book Truth: A Brief History of Total Bull***t on Tuesday 19 November.

The festival programme is packed with events, talks and workshops for all ages, designed to celebrate, inspire and nurture a love of reading.

Creating a legacy

The Mayor of Havering, Councillor Michael Deon Burton, joined staff from the Council’s bereavement service, in presenting a cheque for £8,000 raised by South Essex Crematorium’s specialised metals recycling scheme.

With permission from families, metals recovered from cremations are recycled and all the money raised is given to bereavement-related charities that will help local communities across the borough.

Register to vote

You must be registered to vote by Tuesday 26 November in order to vote in the Parliamentary general election on Thursday 12 December.

If you require a proxy or postal vote, applications must be submitted by 5pm on 26 November.

If you aren't registered to vote, you won't have the chance to have a say on who represents you. You may also have difficulty getting credit if you are not on the Electoral Register. 

  • You can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or via Havering Council's Electoral Services pages
  • everyone is responsible for registering themselves. The system changed in 2014 and is called Individual Electoral Registration
  • you need to provide a few more details to register - including your national insurance number and date of birth. This makes the electoral register more secure.

Schoolchildren eating school lunch 2019

Havering has an extra special reason to celebrate National School Meals Week after seeing a 14 per cent increase in school catered lunches since launching its multi-award winning Veggie Run campaign.

The week is an opportunity to celebrate all that is great about Havering Council's nutritious school meals, which are served daily in 56 schools to more than 22,000 pupils.

Community conversation

South of borough sports centre conversation Oct 2019

Sports lovers and health-conscious residents in the south of the borough have been asked their views as Havering Council kick-starts a community conversation on where the new leisure centre should go.

Following the closure of the Chafford Sports Complex in June, the Council has been working with leisure centre provider SLM to find a new site for a brand new replacement facility.

SFH Peter Whitehead Nov 2019

Peter Whitehead is an ex-Bobby. Since retiring from the police, he's been giving up his time to chauffeur patients to and from Saint Francis Hospice in Havering-atte-Bower.

Peter's wife passed away suddenly last year, and he needed something to fill the void she left behind.

If he's driving people who are visiting the hospice for the first time, Peter always asks what they are expecting to find.

"Somewhere dark, gloomy and miserable," often comes the reply.

Peter tells them that they are in for a pleasant surprise.

Looking to the future

Intl day of the Disabled 2019

Havering is marking the International Day of the Disabled Person with a one-day conference.

This year’s theme is The Future is Accessible.

Professionals across the borough are invited to attend the event, which takes place at the Salvation Army, Romford, on Tuesday, 3 December.
