This week I was proud to attend the launch of the Havering Poppy Appeal 2019, which for the first time was at the Town Hall. This included a special tribute to the sacrifices made in war by our brave servicemen and women. You can read more about this below and see my short video.
I recently went to Elm Park Station to witness first hand a joint operation between Havering Council, Havering Police and British Transport Police to crack down on crime along the District Line. See my video. I'm proud of the work we are doing to fund additional police officers to keep us safe in Havering.
I am looking forward to joining our local police officers in other parts of our borough shortly to learn about the challenges they face in tackling crime in our borough.
Lastly, after my announcement last week of free parking each weekend from the 30 November to help our local businesses in the run up to Christmas, I am pleased to tell you this week that there will also be free parking in Council car parks for each of our borough's Christmas lights switch-on events. The first will be held in Market Place, Romford on 14 November.
Cllr Damian White
Leader, Havering Council

Romford's Sapphire Ice & Leisure has been named the UK's best new civic building at a national awards event recognising the country's public projects.
The eye-catching new addition to Western Road took the title of Civic Building of the Year at the SPACES Awards, one of the most prestigious awards for highlighting the very best projects delivered by local authorities.
It's your last chance to have your say on how the Council should spend its money in next year’s budget.
You can get involved by taking part in our online consultation on the Havering website.
Be sure to share this with your friends and family who live the borough so everyone has a voice on how we can make Havering even better, together.
Hurry, the consultation ends this Sunday (3 November).

Air pollution is a major public health risk, ranking alongside cancer, heart disease and obesity. It shortens lives and damages quality of life for many people.
Although during the summer it is possible to see the haze of pollution across the skyline, and the air smells stuffy and stale, air quality can actually be poorer in winter than summer.
There are small changes you can make today which will reduce your exposure to air pollution. These include:
- not using your car for short journeys – walk, cycle or take public transport
- reducing how much you burn in your home and garden
- staying away from traffic if you’re walking or cycling
- sign up for the AirText app for alerts on high pollution days
- turning off your car engine when you park, or are waiting in traffic.
