Earlier this week I was able to witness first hand the start of demolition on one of our old sheltered accommodation schemes in South Hornchurch and the start of construction of a brand new retirement village.
In Havering, we always put residents at the centre of everything we do. This new village will create a safe haven for our older and more vulnerable residents, whilst ensuring they can live full and independent lives. With an ever-ageing population, it is vital that our borough-wide regeneration creates homes that meet the needs of the local community. I am pleased to see us reach another key milestone in our partnership with Wates Residential.
Yesterday I attended a launch event for Heart & Soul with KingsHeart, the new operator of 80-84 Market Place in Romford. I am really pleased to be working with them to ensure that businesses that have found a home in the venue can continue to thrive.
Lastly, I was pleased to hear that Havering Council was successful in its application last week for an injunction that will help us tackle the problem of illegal encampments around our borough that often lead to fly-tipping, littering and anti-social behaviour. You can read more in the story below.

Demolition has begun on the former Solar, Serena and Sunrise Courts site, in South Hornchurch, which is set to become a modern retirement village.
The site, which previously provided sheltered accommodation for local residents, will provide around 172 new high-quality apartments, all of which will be designed to fully meet the needs and aspirations of local people who are approaching, or who have reached, retirement age.
It is part of the first phase of Havering Council’s 12 Estates joint venture project with national developer Wates Residential.

Earlier this month the High Court heard Havering Council’s claim for an injunction to prevent unauthorised encampments across more than 200 sites in the borough and against named individuals.
The granting of an interim injunction wil allow the Council to effectively tackle the issue of unauthorised traveller encampments within the borough on both public and privately owned land.

Adults with learning disabilities at the Avelon Road Centre have been recycling bowling skittles into works of art as part of the centre’s arts and crafts activities.
The Avelon Road Centre, run by Havering Council, offers creative activities and experiences for adults with learning disabilities, and over the last six months adults of varying abilities, supported by staff, have created a whole squad of skittle characters.

Havering residents are being invited to a series of talks to help them spot the signs of child criminal exploitation and gain information about what to do if they suspect a child could be at risk.
Six public talks are being held across the borough in response to calls from the public for more information about what is known as county lines.

A £33 million plan to deliver more early years and school places to meet Havering’s growing population was approved at the Council’s cabinet meeting on Wednesday night.
Under the latest plans unveiled by Havering Council, more new nursery places will be provided; numerous primaries will be expanded to cater for more pupils and additional places will be available for pupils with special educational needs. A new free school is also planned for the borough.

Can you provide a listening ear and a few hours each month to support a child or young person in care in the borough?
Havering Council is looking for Independent Visitors who can become regular befrienders by taking young people on trips, doing an activity together or simply having a chat over a coffee.
The Early Help Service is looking for volunteers to become consistent independent visitors who can meet a child or young person every two to three weeks to listen to their thoughts and feelings.
No specific qualifications are required, just a passion and commitment to providing the best possible support to a child or young person. Full checks, training and regular supervision will be provided, and expenses will be reimbursed.
For an informal discussion about the role please call Alison Day on 01708 434111 or email: alison.day2@havering.gov.uk
