I popped down to South Street in Romford last week after confirmation that Havering Council has purchased the retail unit, which is home to Marks & Spencer.
It’s part of the Council’s long-term vision for a transformed Romford – protecting retail opportunities for businesses and residents through Council-owned properties.
Not only will this investment create an additional income for the Council, but it also means that Romford will continue to provide a quality shopping offer for residents, with much-loved British retailers such as M&S.
The unit recently became available and the Council purchase was completed last month. The Council is delighted to be able to provide M&S with a Home in Romford for the future.
This purchase underpins our vision for vibrant and healthy high streets across Havering and will make Romford an even better shopping destination.
In addition to protecting and nurturing retail, the investment will provide an added revenue stream for the Council.

Leader of the Council

At this year's Havering Show you can celebrate the life and music of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse.
This authentic and respectful tribute is the only show worldwide to be endorsed by both of Amy’s parents, Janis and Mitch Winehouse, and the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
Taking songs from the multi-platinum selling albums Frank, Back To Black and Lioness: Hidden Treasures, renowned tribute artist Laura Jane Butler will recreate Amy's distinctive sound.
She will be singing Amy's hits including Valerie, Tears Dry On Their Own, Rehab, Love Is A Losing Game, You Know I’m No Good and of course Back to Black.
Laura recreates Amy’s most memorable live performances including the jazz standard from Ella Fitzgerald ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’, Amy’s version of ‘Mister Magic’ from the legendary Grover Washington, Sam Cook’s ‘Cupid’ and ‘Monkey Man’ by The Specials.
