Tackling serious violence

Violence summit Jan 2019

Havering was part of the first tri-borough Serious Violence Summit earlier this month which brought together key partners and local communities to discuss jointly tackling violent crime.

Hosted by Barking and Dagenham Council, in partnership with Havering and Redbridge Councils, the event was attended by more than 240 delegates who looked at the issues around serious violence and shared ideas on solutions.

Havering Council is again promoting the Collective Energy Switching Scheme to help residents use their collective buying power to lower their energy bills. Energy companies will offer their lowest energy tariff in a reverse auction to people who have registered. The lowest bidder wins, and the customer wins.

Creating the Romford masterplan

Havering Council is asking residents and businesses for their thoughts on how to improve Romford Town Centre and surrounding area.

A series of public engagement events to gather ideas for the Council’s Romford Masterplan kicked off last week with the first consultation event in Romford Market Place. You can also share your views online.

Between now and June there will be plenty of ways for people in the borough to get involved in the conversation.

Honouring Holocaust victims

Holocaust Memorial Day 2019

Residents in Havering marked Holocaust Memorial Day at a special service in Romford last Sunday.

It was held in Coronation Gardens. The theme for this year’s event was ‘Torn from Home’ reflecting on what happens when individuals, families and communities are driven out of their homes because of persecution and the threat of genocide.

The One Havering Community Cohesion Strategy was launched earlier this week at Havering Town Hall at a meeting attended by faith, voluntary, charity, and other local groups as well as Council Leader, Cllr Damian White.

The aim of the strategy is to foster good community relations and promote civic pride.

It has supported more than 70 families since it was set up a year ago.

Love your Market

Romford Market Valentine's event 2019

There's a chance to get all loved up on Saturday February 9 when Romford Market holds a special Valentine's Event in partnership with Queens Theatre.

From 11am to 3pm you will be able to try ballroom dancing for free and meet the cast of Kiss Me Quickstep, get the kids making cards and having free facepainting, and meet Alice in Wonderland characters the Queen of Hearts and Mad Hatter as they walk around the Market.

Land of the Fanns phography competition 2018

The organisation that looks after the Land of the Fanns, an intricate landscape of ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering, is holding a winter photographic competition.

They are looking for photographs which capture the essence of the area – the landscape, heritage and the community.

Call to get involved

Leader at Meet the Buyer event Jan 2019

Havering Council and Wates Residential are calling for Havering businesses to be part of their ground-breaking programme to deliver 3,000 high quality homes for local people over the next 12 to 15 years.

Last week the joint venture partners hosted the first of four ‘Meet the Buyer’ events for local suppliers to learn about contract opportunities on the biggest regeneration project in the borough.

Veggie Run, Havering Council's healthy living campaign for children has announced a new partnership with Stubbers Adventure Centre in Upminster.

To celebrate this partnership Stubbers Adventure Centre has created six bespoke ‘Learning Outside of the Classroom’ activity days for primary, infant or junior schools to be won.

To be in with a chance of winning these prizes children need to eat a healthy school meal. Parents can purchase a school meal here.

Council teams are working with a number of organisations, charities, and services, to provide essential help and support over the winter months.

Criminology conference

Havering Sixth Form College students heard from real life former prisoners recently at a Criminology conference titled Behind Bars – are prisons a place for Retribution, Rehabilitation or Punishment?

Sponsored by the College’s security firm CIS Security Ltd, the whole day conference at the College in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, was attended by students studying Law, Psychology, Criminology, Sociology and Politics.
