Looking after our feathered friends

Tree with feathers

Each year some of the 2,500 trees on pavements and verges throughout Havering start to sprout shoots from the base of the tree, known as "feathering". This can lead to problems such as growth over pavements and roads, causing trip hazards.

Havering Council has now started the a pruning programme which will be completed by mid-June to remove this growth.  Affected trees will be re-inspected in October so that any further growth can be removed before winter sets in.

You can also help:

  • Use secateurs to cut off the growth as close to the tree base as possible
  • Do NOT remove anything above head height, leave this to the Council
  • Dispose of the cut shoots in your compost bin, your green waste bin or take it to the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Gerpins Lane in Upminster.
