Light at the end of the tunnel

Silvertown tunnel 2018

There's good news for users of the busy Blackwall Tunnel after Transport for London was given the green light by the Department for Transport to deliver a new road tunnel under the Thames in east London.

The tunnel, which is set to open in 2023, will help ease the current serious congestion at Blackwall Tunnel and improve the reliability and resilience of the road network in east London. It will enable significantly improved cross-river public transport connections, with up to 37 buses an hour using the tunnel.

Proud to foster

Michelle foster carer May 2018

Havering Council is on the lookout for new foster carers as part of the Fostering Network’s annual national awareness and recruitment campaign: Foster Care Fortnight 2018.

This year’s campaign, which runs until Sunday 27 May, focusses on the theme: ‘Be proud to foster' and the fostering team will be out across the borough, raising awareness and recruiting new foster carers.

Michelle, an experienced Havering foster carer shared her story: “I thought I would start fostering when I retired, but something inside me changed and I realised I couldn’t wait, so just under two years ago, I applied to foster with Havering Council. Since then my husband and I have supported five children, including two sibling groups. We can provide care for 0 -18 year olds, but my preference is teenagers, as I have younger children and this dynamic works best in our household.

“I wanted young people to know that when they walked into my home for the first time, they were accepted for who they are, as many have had tough experiences. You really feel so proud when a teenager who previously used to avoid school is now willing to attend and engage due to your own encouragement. Bringing out the best in a child is a blessing."

Careful: Don't touch!

Oak processionary moths on an oak tree

If you see the larvae or caterpillars of oak processionary moths on oak trees (as pictured above) do not touch those caterpillars, and keep your children and pets away too.

These caterpillars can affect the health of oak trees, people and animals. They feed on oak leaves, and large populations can strip trees bare. The tiny hairs on the caterpillars can cause skin and eye irritations, sore throats and breathing difficulties in people and animals.

If you spot such an infestation please email opm@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or call 0300 067 4442 with a precise description of the affected oak tree’s location.

Don't get scammed

Scam sign 300 x 300

We've become aware of two scams that are currently operating in the borough.

Two recent cases in Rainham and Romford involved a roofing scam where residents were asked to withdraw money to fix their roof, which may not have needed to be fixed, or was fixed incorrectly, but still charged. This scam cost one resident almost £39,000.

We've also had cases where callers have pretended to be the police, and asked residents to supply personal details or withdraw cash.

If you've been affected by any fraudulent activity please report it at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.

Good signs of improvement

Bower Park head

Bower Park Academy in Romford has now been ranked as ‘Good’ by the school inspectorate Ofsted in its latest report published this month.

The report said that leaders at the school, including Head Teacher Stuart McLaughlin (pictured), and governors are making "real and sustained improvements to teaching, learning and pupils’ outcomes". Osted noted that previous weaknesses had been tackled  head-on and that the leadership were "persistent in their drive for quality."

Crack down on rogue landlords

HMO rogue landlord example

Havering Council has a served a landlord with two fixed penalty notices totalling £20,000  for operating a property that had no heating, exposed electrical wiring (pictured), a dangerous staircase and an unguarded roof access entrance.

The Council’s Landlord Licencing scheme which started in 12 wards across the borough earlier this year requires private landlords of houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs) to apply for a licence. The scheme was introduced to tackle the poor management of private rented homes, overcrowding and anti-social behaviour.

Since March the Council has been actively enforcing the scheme and in recent weeks have issued penalties totalling £55,000. This money can be used to fund more enforcement action against unscrupulous landlords.

If you are an HMO landlord, make sure you are licensed.

Ramadan reminders

NHS CCG logo

Local GPs are urging local people observing Ramadan to stay healthy and fast safely. Ramadan began this week and at this time of year with longer daylight hours and higher temperatures there's an increased risk of dehydration.

This can particularly affect people with existing medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. For healthy meal ideas, visit www.nhs.uk/LiveWell.
