Romford's bid for a BID

Plans made by the Romford Town Management Partnership to form a Business Improvement District (BID) were approved at last Wednesday's Havering Council cabinet meeting and business owners in the town centre will now be balloted to see if it has their support in June.

Andrew Blake-Herbert, Chief Executive of Havering Council, said: “We will always do our best to nurture, support and provide spaces for local businesses to thrive. The Romford Business Improvement District will offer local businesses a stronger voice in the community, and a more effective environment for success.”

Still time to register

Election registration 2018

On Thursday 3 May Havering will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at a local level. Local government elections select councillors, who are responsible for making decisions on running services in Havering including housing, education, transport, planning, parks, leisure, social care and waste management.

In order to vote in this election, residents must be on the electoral register. Paying council tax does not automatically make you eligible to vote. The deadline to register to vote is midnight tonight (Tuesday 17 April). If you're not already registered you can apply online. It takes just five minutes.

Havering School kids April 2018

Ninety-seven per cent of children due to start primary school in Havering this September have been offered a place at one of their top three preferred schools. This is an exciting time for many young children as they start their education, develop social skills and learn in a new environment. 

Any parent who has yet to apply for their child’s 2018 Reception school place should contact the Admissions team as soon as possible. Children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 are due to start in a school reception class this year. Email admissions@havering.gov.uk.

Stop Hate UK is working to challenge all forms of hate crime and discrimination, based on any aspect of an individual’s identity, providing independent, confidential and accessible reporting and support for victims, witnesses and third parties.

The Stop Hate Line, now available in Havering, encompasses reporting hate crime via telephone, online channels, email, text or letter and gives victims and witnesses of hate crime a safe and independent place to talk about their experiences and explore their options for taking things further.

Waste trucks April 2018

The Council’s new refuse truck design with the catchy strapline – ‘Watch Your Wasteline’, is part of efforts to reduce the amount of waste in Havering.

Currently, up to 50 per cent of black bag rubbish in the borough is food waste, and it costs the Council just under £15 million to dispose of all that waste.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, and local GPs are reminding us that spotting bowel cancer early could save your life.

Bowel cancer is one of the UK’s biggest cancer killers, but it is treatable and curable, especially if caught at the earliest stage.

Screening remains one of the most effective ways of spotting bowel cancer early, and the NHS Bowel Screening Programme is available to anyone aged 60 and over who is registered with a GP and lives in outer north east London.

Go on a veggie run

Engayne School Veggie App Apr 2018

This Thursday the Council will launch the Veggie Run app, England’s first council-created app to promote healthy eating to primary and junior school children.

The app has been designed in partnership with children from Engayne Primary School (pictured) and aims to address the rising obesity epidemic in the borough and highlight the health benefits of a healthy school catered lunch.

All primary and junior schools will be issued codes on Thursday that they will then share with pupils. The Council and Havering Catering Services will offer the best performing schools and pupils prizes this term ranging from new bikes from Cycles UK Romford, free lunches from sQuid, sports activities from Everyone Active, plus many more from Quorn.

News for marathon runners

DLR train

Transport for London is advising customers using the Docklands Light Railway that further planned strike action by the RMT union will affect services over a four day period starting this Friday.

Plans are being developed with the aim of operating a limited service over the four days, which coincide with the London Marathon on Sunday 22 April.

Improving safety for passengers

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a consultation seeking views on how to improve safety for private hire passengers.

The 12-week consultation invites views on an advanced driving test for private hire drivers, providing passengers with clear information on who to contact to provide feedback or to raise a complaint, and whether more robust background checks could be introduced for drivers. TfL is also seeking views on whether changes are needed to insurance arrangements for private hire services.
