Spot the signs

CSE July 2017

During the holidays many children and teenagers have a lot more freedom and will be enrolling in camps, attending activity days, visiting friends and family or just hanging out and enjoying themselves. These are all places that sexual exploitation can occur. It is important to pay close attention to who is in contact with your child and to remain vigilant to their online activity.

Connections making Havering

Elizabeth line train at Shenfield

Services on the Elizabeth line are set to be even more extensive and frequent than originally planned when the line becomes fully operational in December 2019, according to Transport for London.

An additional two trains per hour will now run between Paddington and Shenfield and trains will also call at Heathrow Terminal 5 – meaning all Heathrow Terminals will be served by the Elizabeth line. A total of six Elizabeth line trains per hour will serve Heathrow Terminals from December 2019.

To enable the additional services the number of trains that will operate on the Elizabeth line will increase from 66 to 70 trains. The new rolling stock that will connect three stations in our borough directly to central London, Paddington, and Heathrow Airport will feature walk-through carriages, air conditioning, CCTV and real-time travel information.

A new map showing Elizabeth line services from December 2019 is available to download.

Not just vegetable peelings and garden waste but all sorts of other packaging and paper that otherwise end up in black rubbish sacks. Not only can composting reduce the nearly £15 million the Council has to spend on waste disposal annually, but it will make nutrient rich plant food for your garden, for free!  So whether you are new to composting or want to improve the quality of your compost come along to a free workshop to find out how.

Friday 11 August: 2pm - 3.30pm Romford Library, St Edwards Way, RM1 3AR

Look out and look up

Kite in substation

UK Power Networks are warning residents to ‘Look out and look up’ when taking part in summer outdoor activities.

Even coming into contact with low voltage cables can be fatal so the main advice is to steer well clear of any overhead power lines, or equipment such as substations.

Top top safety tips include:

  • Always look up and around for overhead electricity wires before kite flying, climbing trees, fishing or carrying long objects
  • Anglers should take their rods apart before moving from one place to another and to carry them parallel to the ground.

Preventing rip-offs

Trading standards

A Havering Council Trading Standards officer who devised a new banking protocol that helps people who are being ripped off by doorstep criminals has been recognised by the profession.

David Turner was behind the Havering Banking Protocol which was the preferred model for the new Metropolitan Police Banking Protocol. In its first four months, the Banking Protocol helped save vulnerable pensioners £1 million and enabled the Met to make 14 arrests.

We have recently received reports of elderly Havering Residents being targeted on the telephone by fraudsters posing as HM Revenue & Customs in order to frighten them into purchasing iTunes vouchers to settle a fictitious unpaid tax and/or arrest warrant. The scammers are quite aggressive and persuasive. Thanks to the vigilance of staff from two Havering retailers the attempted purchases of the iTunes vouchers were prevented by careful questioning of the victim, thus preventing the loss of £3,800.
