Understand your personal motivation for attending the event - Do you want to network with employers? Get support with your CV? Receive help with the job application process? Gain inside knowledge about a particular sector? Identifying your reasons for attending will help you use your time effectively.
Time planning - find out the location of the event- work out how long you want to attend for- bring a snack and refreshments if necessary. Bring 20-30 copies of your CV- ensure it’s free of errors. Pack a charged laptop if necessary. Update your LinkedIn profile. Depending on which employers you want to meet you might want to create different CV’s- e.g., one for retail roles, one for hospitality roles. Bring only what you need- have your CV, pens, laptop accessible- the less you have to rifle through your bag when talking to an employer, the better.
First impressions - Research shows that you have about seven seconds to give off a good first impression. Your clothes and body language may play an important role in this judgement process. Dress appropriately in comfortable, clean clothes. Smart casual is probably the safest bet.
Find out who’s attending - It may be worth creating a rough plan of the day, recording which employers you want to engage with, creating a list in order of priority. Events can be overwhelming for some, by creating this plan you avoid wasting time and reduce the risk of neglecting to meet your favoured employers.
Research, Research, Research! - Perhaps one of the most important points to consider. Employers will reasonably expect you to understand their company and their services. Researching the employer, via their website and platforms like LinkedIn will help you identify some questions that you can ask them, thereby creating a good first impression. Being prepared will also help calm your nerves.
What you could ask employers:
- What they believe are the challenges/rewards of the role/s
- The culture - size of the teams, impending changes, hybrid working options
- Training and development - opportunities to progress
- Opportunities to use your language-scope to utilise this nationally/internationally?
Avoid asking:
- What their company does - you should have researched this, other attendees will have likely done so
- What you can earn - this conversation will arise later
Recording information and next steps - When speaking to an employer take notes if necessary- particularly relevant if you’re provided with further names and their contact details. Ask the employer representative for their business card. You may want to follow this meeting up with a thank you email. If you’re a member of LinkedIn, you might want to send a personalised message to connect.
-
Do pre-register for the event, and do attempt to get a list of the organisations that will be attending the job fair before you go.
-
Do plan out a strategy to maximise your time at the event, don't bother spending time with recruiters from organisations you have no interest in.
-
Do attempt to research basic information about each organisation you hope to interview with.
-
Do prepare a one minute "elevator pitch" that focuses on your unique selling points; what you can offer that benefits the employer.
-
Do be prepared to talk about yourself and your background. Providing oversight on your work experience, abilities and skills is a huge selling point to potential employers.
-
Do have a few questions prepared for each recruiter, but don't ask questions that any good job-seeker should already know, such as "What does your company do?"
-
Do get a recruiter's business card and say their name several times during your conversation. This will display your level of engagement and enthusiasm.
-
Do remember to present yourself with a firm handshake, eye contact, a warm smile and strong voice.
-
Do bring enough copies of your CV and do bring different versions of your CV if you are searching for different types of jobs.
-
Do be sure to ask about the hiring process of each organisation, but don't ask too many questions about salaries, vacation time, and other benefits.
-
Do take the initiative and ask about the next step in the process. And do be prepared to follow-up all job leads.
-
Do be sure to follow-up with each recruiter.
-
Do dress professionally -- conservative is always the safest choice. And do wear comfortable shoes.
-
Don't just drop your CV off on an organisation's table and walk off.
-
Don't eliminate companies because they are recruiting for positions outside your field; take the time to network with the recruiter and get the name of a hiring manager for your particular career field.
-
Don't just drop your resume on the recruiter's table and walk off.
-
Don't be afraid or intimidated by the recruiter; he or she is there to do a job -- to meet and screen potential candidates.
-
Don't forget to be aware of your body language and bad habits, such as playing with your hair, rocking from side-to-side, chewing gum, etc.
-
Don't use filler words such as "um", "like", "you know."
-
Don't ever just walk up to a table and interrupt a current conversation; wait your turn and be polite.
-
Don't waste the opportunity to network, not only with the recruiters, but with fellow job-seekers and other professionals in attendance.
-
Don't ever say anything negative to the recruiter about your previous jobs, companies, or supervisors.
