The Digital Storytelling Trail is Now LIVE!

 TheĀ Pen to Print Digital Storytelling Trail is an ongoing project to record and share stories about Barking and Dagenham.
We have been working with our new partner Bloomberg Connects and now we are pleased to announce the trails are now live!
Using new technology to help read, watch or listen to stories new and old.
You can add your memories and creations, send us photos, drawings, audio recordings, video, poems and stories fact or fiction about anywhere in Barking and Dagenham and add to the trails now! We will be adding a Becontree Estate Trail and a Trewern/Hay Trail soon.

In celebration of Black History Month, join authors, poets, and cultural storytellers, Jerry Chiemeke, Alex Murdock, Danny Baxter, Damilola Olaniyi in a powerful conversation with Amaka Obioji.
Together, they will reflect on the significance of Black History through the lens of art, migration, and identity, exploring how storytelling and creative expression shape narratives, preserve heritage and strengthen community connections.

Meet Gemma Bishop, the author of the poetry book, Wonky Thoughts: An Insight into an Anorexic Journey and hear more about her personal story. Gemma will be debunking the common misconceptions about eating disorders and spread greater awareness of how the mental health condition affects real life.
Gemma has a passion for inspiring others and hopes the poetry collection can encourage everyone to look deep within themselves and find just one thing that makes them smile, as you only get one chance at life, and it is better if you accept who you are.

Celebrate the spooky season with two creative writing workshops exploring atmosphere, setting, and character in horror, crime, and paranormal genres.
The first session focuses on crafting immersive settings and enhancing atmosphere, while helping writers develop their voice through practical exercises. The second session builds on this by exploring archetypal spooky characters including human, ghostly, and paranormal figures, and examining their psychology.
Through scene-based tasks, participants will learn to develop compelling villains and use character to enrich mood and setting.

A full-day workshop led by poet, Anna Robinson.
A Book of Hours is a traditional aid to the hours of the day traditionally used for prayer. How might we use one now to contemplate our routines - the ways we spend every day!
Using a mix of writing, embroidery, and printmaking, we will make a book that explores beauty of the everyday and ourselves. Through a mixture of writing exercises and craft activities, we will construct, write and illustrate our own Japanese stab-bound books.
Please note materials will be provided, but feel free to bring any fabric, pictures, threads or buttons you'd like to incorporate into your work.

Ideal for children ages 6+ who will need to be accompanied by an adult on the day.
Calling all young storytellers and artists!
In this special edition Black History Month workshop, children are inspired to reflect on what makes them unique and use this to help shape their stories. With expert guidance and a ready-to-use book template, kids will transform their ideas into a real keepsake.
Additionally, each child will receive a certificate of participation at the end, celebrating their creativity and accomplishment. Donāt miss this wonderful opportunity to inspire confidence in your childās budding talents.
NB: As the session will involve crayons, glue, and glitter, it may get a little messy. We recommend that children dress appropriately for creative activities.

The Book Challenge
Have a novel idea or a finished book but unsure whatās next? Submit your idea for a chance to be mentored by a professional writer and get your book ready for publication. Selected writers will receive 12 months of free mentoring in 2027.

Poetry Competition
Write a poem in any style, up to a maximum of two A4 pages. You can choose any subject, and youāre welcome to submit more than one poem, but no more than three entries will be accepted per person.

Speech and Drama Festival
Write and perform a poem or monologue lasting no more than three minutes. Entries will be judged on both writing and performance and all entrants must be available to perform at the Speech and Drama Festival auditions on Saturday, 18 July 2026, between 9am and 5pm.
