Lambeth Libraries events and activities for April 2025

open-to-discovery
Alex Wheatle

Alex Wheatle 1963-2025

We are sad to learn of the passing of local author Alex Wheatle. Many of us here in Lambeth Libraries have worked with Alex throughout his life, he was a huge supporter of the library service and has done so much to reflect the experience of so many young people of the borough.

Alex’s relationship with Lambeth Libraries goes back to when he was a child being taken to Carnegie Library when his mum couldn’t afford to heat the house to when he was released from HMP Brixton (arrested for his part in the Brixton Uprising) and he headed to Brixton library to read CLR James’ Black Jacobins and any other literature he could find on the Black experience.

His books for adults, children and teens are hugely popular and it's a great loss to the literature world. You will be missed. Rest in Power Alex.

Lise Meyrick: Fleeting Fragmented

Lise Meyrick: Fleeting Fragmented

Showing until Friday 18 April.
Durning Library
, SE11 4HF.
Exhibition available during Library opening hours.

Meyrick’s work explores the fleeting and fragmented nature of memory—how places, feelings, and moments shift over time. Inspired by nature’s changing landscapes, she uses layers of acrylic, watercolour, and mixed media to capture both clarity and uncertainty, light and shadow.

Blues run throughout her work—deep indigos, soft ceruleans, and vibrant ultra marine tones—reflecting the vastness of sky and water, but also the weight of emotion. Ultimately, Meyrick is drawn to the space between remembering and forgetting, where fragments of the past take on new meaning in the present. She says: “My work is an invitation to linger in the in-between spaces.”
