Mirelle’s story
After losing her job last year, Mireille struggled to stay on top of rising bills and was feeling stressed and worried about her financial situation. She didn’t know where to turn, but through the Council’s partnership with Lightning Reach, she managed to quickly find and apply for support. She received £700 per year towards her rent costs, and was given a list of other opportunities to get help
Mireille was both relieved and surprised: “It was very, very easy. There were no complicated questions and it just asked for the necessary information that was needed. It’s great to have all that help put in one place so you can go and read about everything available.”

Estate football programme
The South Estates summer football programme has been very popular following on from the 2024 Euros competition. The estates participating this year were Fern Lodge, Sackville and Streatham Hill. On average 20 young people attended each session which were spread over eight weeks throughout the months of July and August.
There were a number of ‘new starters’ who had never playing any competitive sports before. Renee Okuefuna, Chair of the Mountearl and Adare TRA, is pictured putting one potential goalkeeper through their paces.

Palace Road Estate
Palace Road Estate held their summer fun day in glorious sunshine on the afternoon of Sunday 24 July 2024. It was a very special occasion as this was the first time the community had met since the pandemic. There was something for everyone including bouncy castle, games, music, raffles and trivia. A number of neighbouring estates were also invited including St Martins and Hillside Gardens.
There were residents as far afield as the Fern Lodge Estate who came along to the event. This created a special atmosphere of togetherness on the day. The fun day concluded with a special performance from the Brixton Chamber Orchestra (BCO) on the penultimate leg of their summer tour.
The Palace Road Estate TRA coordinated the event with the assistance of a getting involved grant. They have already started planning the next one and provisionally booked BCO. Roll on 2025!

Smart Metering Implementation Programme
Smart gas and electricity meters could help you reduce energy usage and save money on bills. With a smart meter, you can see in real time how much energy you are using, when you are using it, and how much it costs. This can help you to make changes to use energy more efficiently, including using appliances at times when rates are lower if you have a smart tariff. Research from Smart Energy GB has found that 72 per cent of people with smart meters have a better idea of their energy costs. Having a smart meter also enables prepayment customers to keep a check on their balance and top up their accounts online or by phone.
If you want to find out more about smart meters, please visit the Smart Meter website or contact your energy supplier.
