Improving health and well-being

Love Lambeth email header

Claire

Hello,

Tackling the climate crisis and improving the health and well-being of residents across Lambeth remain top priorities for our council, and promoting active travel is key to delivering on both those ambitions.

Earlier this month, we hosted our second Bike the Borough event, with over 300 adults and students from 14 schools, alongside our fantastic partner organisations, taking part in a mass cycle ride from Brockwell Park to the Oval. This is part of our Big Shift programme, supported by cycling charities Cycle Confident and Wheels for Wellbeing, to educate and boost participation in more sustainable and active modes of travel and make use of the wonderful cycle networks we have invested in.

The London Cycling Campaign is also helping residents across London take up cycling with schemes like Cycle Buddies where less confident cyclists can buddy up with someone more experienced, as well as hosting events for a range of ability levels to boost cycling in our city.

‘No Need To Stress, Your Black Bin Needs Less' is the new campaign launched by Lambeth Council to boost recycling rates in the borough and support the progress made by the switch to fortnightly waste. The new campaign features practical, interactive information on how to recycle more, as well as a mobile phone game, the Recycle Rumble, which is particularly designed for younger people to get them in the habit of wasting less early.

New chapter for Brixton Library

Donatus in Brixton librarry

Lambeth Council’s £1million project to overhaul and improve the much-loved Brixton Library in Windrush Square is complete. The library now offers better study areas, private meeting booths, and extra toilets. During the works, it was also made fully accessible, and a lift was installed that allows access to basement meeting rooms, the first-floor library collection, and other areas within the building.

Opportunity knocks for Lambeth resident

Queen in Lambeth Town Hall

Lambeth resident Queen Appiah-Mills, 29, is delighted to have landed a job in the construction sector with Niblock Building Contractors in Anerley, following a recommendation to look at Lambeth Council’s online job portal. The full-time position was given to Queen after completing work experience in June. Lambeth is currently refreshing its Opportunity Lambeth jobs portal and it will be relaunched in September as BeLambeth.

Students in Lambeth celebrate GCSE results

Students collect GCSE results

Last week, we visited Lilian Baylis Technology School to meet students who were there to receive their GCSE results. After congratulating them and letting them know support from the council is available, we spoke to Kien, one of 116 students from the school who took their GCSEs and was one of the top performers with all eights and nines.
