Hello,
This week, councillors and council officers have been engaging with our faith organisations, sanctuary seekers, community groups, MPs and the Met police following the shocking violence, racism and Islamophobia seen in towns and cities in the UK last weekend and earlier this week.
Despite the rumours of far-right groups targeting other London boroughs, not Lambeth, these did not materialise. As a city, we will continue to send a clear message to those seeking to spread violence, hatred and division. The strength of our diversity and the importance we all place in it, will not be threatened by an ignorant and hateful few.
Lambeth shows the best of London’s diversity. Our community cohesion is hard fought for and hard won, and we will continue to champion, nurture and maintain it. We will continue our work as a council to engage with faith organisations and groups who support our sanctuary seekers to make sure they have the support they need, alongside liaising with the police as we work together to keep Lambeth and London safe.

At this year’s Bike the Borough event, almost 200 pupils from 14 local primary schools took part in the three mile ride from Brockwell Park to Oval Cricket Ground. Onlookers cheered as cycled through residential streets and back roads, supported by professional traffic marshals, volunteers and cycle instructors who ensured the route was safe. Throughout the year, the young people have been learning about bike skills and cycle confidence, and this event let them put that knowledge into practice.

This week, Lambeth Council has been liaising with faith groups, sanctuary services and the Met Police following reports of planned far-right protests in London. The council welcome the Government’s decision to deploy thousands of riot police to areas affected by this violence, as far-right activists continue to twist the horrific events in Southport last week for their own abhorrent agenda. They also welcome their announcement to provide security funding for mosques that feel at risk.

Following Pride Month, we ‘re sharing the stories of people from the LGBTQ+ community who have been – and still are – active in helping to make Lambeth a borough of equity and justice.
Rob Berkeley MBE has worked on a mission to make space for Black Queer people in Lambeth and beyond for 25 years – and sees no reason to stop now.
In 2005, Rob organised the first People of Colour float and stage at London Pride and attended the first UK Black Pride. He worked with Terrence Higgins Trust and Dennis Carney to amplify Black voices on public policy, establishing the Black Gay Men’s Advisory Group (BGMAG) – including a public stand against homophobia in dancehall music.
