Creche helpers required for postnatal depression support group in Streatham
The Cedar House Support Group is for women who are experiencing postnatal depression. The groups provide a safe and supportive environment where mothers can get together with others who may be feeling similar to themselves. This helps their recovery by normalising feelings and reducing the sense of isolation that postnatal depression can bring.
To enable these sessions, Cedar House provides creche facilities and is looking for for someone who has experience in looking after young children to help the creche manager at St Stephens Centre, Weir Road.
If you would like to help, please get in touch with Liz Wise.
Dementia Group Work and Project Volunteer in Lambeth
Age Exchange are passionate and experienced in helping those living with dementia and their carers. Age Exchange works side-by-side with people, listening to them and supporting them to take part in creative and stimulating activities. Their work creates lasting friendships - and lots of fun and laughter!
Age Exchange pay special attention to the memories, life experiences and interests of those they support, and use music, movement, arts and crafts, games and other things to learn about people. In their work with people living with dementia, memory is not about asking a person to remember – it is about reaching out to the person in the here and now through the things that are important to them.
As well as the person living with dementia, Age Exchange also invites those that care for them to attend their groups so that they can meet others in a similar position, helping combat loneliness and isolation.
Do you have experience of caring for people with extra care and support needs, either through paid work, volunteering or lived experience? If so, Age Exchange would love to hear from you!. Do you have an interest in and passion for this type of work but are yet to gain relevant experience?
Age Exchange are excited to offer a rewarding and interesting volunteer role to individuals keen to support their dementia services in Lambeth. Volunteers are an invaluable aid in supporting Age Exchange's warm, welcoming dementia groups; ensuring they run smoothly and making sure participants feel included and valued.
Ensuring everyone in the group is included; volunteers are in a good position to notice those who are not so involved and move to work alongside them. Age Exchange aims to enable individuals to make their own choices, rather than deciding or doing things for them. This preserves dignity and supports people to be as independent as they can be. Age Exchange also work with carer’s expert knowledge to understand how best to help the person receiving care.
Communicating with participants: Age Exchange believes communication is always possible, whether this is by talking or for those who have lost the ability to converse, through non-verbal gestures and appropriate touch. Making adjustments so participants are comfortable and everything is in reach for them. Keeping a relaxed atmosphere.
All contributions are viewed as equally valuable, whether you are helping with setting up the group, making teas and coffees, chatting to someone or assisting with activities. Age Exchange encourages their volunteers to get involved, ask questions, come to training and most of all, enjoy themselves. Age Exchange volunteers tell us they get as much out of supporting their work as they put in.
