Authors galore join the Lambeth Libraries Literary Festival

Another month of all things literary: discussions, talks and participatory events. This month also has a special focus on celebrating Windrush Day and Pride 2024. For children we have star authors reading, a full-on day of play, and... the Gruffalo is even visiting! Join us for a bumper month of good writing and fun. 


Dementia

Reading Well for Dementia

In May we launched our new Dementia help book collections at our dementia group in West Norwood Library. The books provide reliable information, advice and support as well as personal stories, chosen by professionals and those living with dementia. Available in all Lambeth Libraries.


Library News

Several of our libraries will be closed on Thursday 4 July as they will be polling stations. The following libraries will be open: Carnegie, Streatham, Upper Norwood, West Norwood.

Brixton Library will reopen on Thursday 6 June following the major building works. There are more improvements planned but these will not require any full closure of the building. Thank you for your patience while this work is taking place. The next stage of planned works for this year will see improvements to South Lambeth, Clapham and Minet Libraries, plus new shelving for Durning Library.

Felix H. Wilkinson is an artist's collective based in South London. ‘Scavengers’, curated by members Duncan McAfee and Lesley Hilling, is an exhibition framework exploring a range of ideas about collage, from traditional analogue cut and paste to contemporary screen-based image works that explore the possibilities of virtuality and endless copying and pasting.

All are welcome to this retrospective exhibition from the painter, librarian, and human rights activist Louise Martin. A long-term Lambeth resident, Louise's work was informed by her meditations on the natural world.

Arresting art works made from abandoned materials found on skips and street corners. Artist Jo Gibbs “transforms the unwanted to the sublime” (Vogue), with sculptures and collages that are a brilliant mix of fun, politics, surrealism and surprises. The common theme is her passion for the environment, recycling, and sustainable materials.

Viva Portugal is a Franco-German documentary made in 1975 and adapted for British audiences by film collective Cinema Action. It depicts the momentous events that followed the overthrow of the fascist regime on the 25th April 1974.

Introduced by Alvaro de Miranda, a Loughborough Junction resident and Portuguese exile who participated in the film’s production.

25th Anniversary of The Gruffalo

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Gruffalo (and 15th anniversary of the film of the book) the Gruffalo themselves will be coming along to meet young book lovers at regular intervals between 10am and 4.30pm. The library will also have loads of free Gruffalo activity and colouring sheets.

There will be Toddler Time screenings of the film throughout the day (£3.30 per child, free for adults) but meeting the Gruffalo and doing the activity sheets etc is free.

All Lambeth Libraries

Play opens up a whole world of possibilities and that's why Lambeth Libraries will be celebrating play on 11 June. Drop into your local library and join us in a game or two. We have some fantastic things lined up and here are just some of the highlights...

Carnegie and Minet Libraries will have games from around the globe, enjoying traditional games from different countries, board games and a library treasure hunt!

Clapham Library, 10.30am to 6pm
A special rhyme time at 10.30am followed by games all day including: Bucket Ping Pong, Hula Hooping, Giant Connect 4, Board Games and more… and why not try out our VR headsets! At 3.30pm our very own Brixton Immortals Dominos Club will be teaching and demonstrating how to play a mean hand of dominos.

Waterloo and Durning Libraries will have Software Animation Balloon Race, soft toy hunt, Puzzles and board games.

West Norwood Library, 4pm to 5.30pm Join us for a fun and engaging Boxercise session. Kids will learn important fitness skills that will benefit them in the long run. We also have a variety of board games and Maths Exploring, Mini Assault Course for Kids and for ages 12+, a Video Game Tournament.
