Lend a Hand at Black Culture Market - Spring Event
Black Culture Market was established to celebrate black culture and commerce in the local community. The event gives entrepreneurs of all ages of African and Caribbean descent visibility for them to flourish and make cultural products more accessible. With just 0.24% of capital in the UK going to black entrepreneurs (0.02% to black female entrepreneurs) access to early-stage capital is limited. BCM aims to bridge the gap by encouraging communities to shop small with black-owned businesses.
On Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June, Black Culture Market will take place in The Department Store, Brixton from 11am to 5pm (public times), for Spring. Plans are in place to make it an even greater success than last year, so there is a lot to do! Black Culture Market needs people who can help set up (Friday 31st May), meet and greet guests at reception (Sat 1st - Sun 2nd June) and/or help pack it away (Sunday 7th April).
Support needed is as follows:
Friday 31st May - Set up is 9.30am to 1pm
Saturday 1st June - 9.30am - 1.30pm or 1.30 - 5.30pm - Event Support (or full day)
Sunday 2nd June - 10.30am - 2.30pm or 2pm - 7pm - Event Support and pack down (or full day) We particularly need people for the Sunday.
If you have the stamina to do all 3 phases that would be amazing but being part of any phase would be great - (for at least 4 hours ideally at the beginning or end of the shift).
If you’d like to know more about what is involved please get in touch with Black Culture Market.
Could you be a Mentor for Refugee Education UK?
Refugee Education UK (REUK) provides education support to young people affected by displacement and crisis. REUK support these young people to overcome the barriers that prevent them from accessing and progressing in education and training, in order that they may realise their potential and build a brighter future, whether in the UK or elsewhere. They work with unaccompanied minors, refugee and asylum seeking children in families, and young survivors of trafficking. The young people on this programme are aged between 14 and 25 years old.
Each Volunteer Educational Mentor provides individual educational support to one young person for one hour a week, for a minimum of six months. These sessions take place either in a public library local to the young person, or in the young person’s college library. Educational goals are set at the beginning of the mentoring relationship, and reviewed after six months. Mentors mostly work on the aspects of homework or classwork which young people find most challenging; at times, they also provide additional teaching and prepare resources. Mentors work closely with the REUK Educational Mentoring team who provide oversight, guidance and support. Find out more about the roles and responsibilities and sign-up here.
Volunteer at Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth
Throughout life, we all encounter problems that catch us unprepared, or are beyond our control. When local residents need guidance and advice support, CAML is here to provide them with free, independent, impartial, and confidential advice. Through performing Research and Campaigns work, CAML also supports the improvement of policies and practices that affect people’s lives both locally and nationally.
Citizen's Advice are an independent charity offering a mix of advice services and support. In fact, CAML is one of London’s leading and busiest advice charities. It was one of the first Citizens Advice services to open in 1939 - with over 80 years’ experience, their services and support are as important today as when their work began.
Whether you want to make good use of your skills, gain valuable experience or get involved with your local community, volunteering with CAML can provide an opportunity for something great. Together, CAML can reach more local people and help find a way forward.
Check out their current volunteering opportunities here, or register your interest in volunteering with CAML here. CAML are looking forward to hearing from you!
Centre 70 is Looking for Bereavement Help Point Volunteers
Bereavement Help Points are places where you can go following a bereavement, to speak to others who are facing loss and share experiences.
Bereavement Help Points bring together people with shared experiences of bereavement and enable them to create their own groups of mutual support and care to help them deal with the challenges and emotions they face. Centre 70 is looking for volunteers who will help provide a Bereavement Help Point each week, to listen and talk to others, and help them understand the feelings they are having and they are not alone. Volunteers are not expected to be professionals or counsellors, but people who have experience of loss and bereavement, and are comfortable talking about it with others.
This Bereavement Help Point is being delivered by Centre 70 Wellbeing Service, a charity based in West Norwood for over 50 years offering Advice Services (debt, housing, welfare benefits, legal) alongside Counselling and Wellbeing services. They are working in collaboration with St Christopher's Hospice who already offer a number of Help Points across South London, and who will bring their expertise to this new bereavement Help Point.
You will need to commit to delivering a weekly group for at least 6 months. The group will be based in West Norwood and will meet in person, during office hours. Interested? Sign up here
