Spring is just around the corner. Have the longer days and slightly warmer weather got you feeling in the mood to start spring cleaning? If so, check the news and events below for tips on connecting with nature as it blooms, seed swapping at The Garden Museum or learning how to repair that toy that broke on boxing day!
In 2024, Lambeth Council is installing over £6 million of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to help reduce surface water flood risk across the borough. SuDS are features that use natural and engineered materials to manage rainwater from roofs and roads. They are often planted with wildflowers and come in many shapes and sizes to fit and blend into their surroundings. Rain gardens, a great example of SuDS, are lowered areas of land that are heavily planted and collect rainwater from their surroundings.
Over the next couple of months, the SuDS team will engage with local residents of some of the schemes to get their opinions.

Benton's Lane Estate
The SuDS team will be at the Balmoral Court meeting room on Thursday 7 March 4.30-7.30pm to discuss the proposed rain gardens and drainage plans with Benton's Lane Estate residents.
Parks
There will be two drop-in sessions on Monday 4 March and Friday 8 March 2-7pm at West Norwood Library to discuss the SuDS design proposed for:
- Norwood Park
- Valley Road Playing Fields
- Streatham Hilly Four Acres
- Brockwell Park
Posters and comment boxes will be available in the library for the whole week, but officers will be attending the drop in sessions to answer any questions.
Keep your eyes peeled for spring flowers appearing in the verges in the coming weeks - like these pretty violets blooming in the verges of Deronda Estate in Tulse Hill.
We’re preparing more sites for floral transformation this spring as part of the Lambeth Bee Roads initiative to support pollinators and connect wildlife habitats across the borough. In the current phase, we are stripping turf and making roadside meadows at Clarence Avenue, Thornton Road, Atkins Road, Rush Common, and Durning Road.

In the words of one student:
"I loved how every lesson was extremely fun and full of amazing facts. I would 100% go again and recommend this workshop and didn’t dislike anything even a little bit."

Dr Bike and Bike Market 10am-4pm Sunday 10 March
Head to Brixton Windmill Centre for all your bike needs, with stalls from Dr Bike and Bike Market.
At Dr Bike sessions, experienced mechanics check everything on your bike from wheels, brakes, gears and tyre pressure to lights, racks, pedals, saddles and more.
Any minor adjustments we can make to the bike we do there and then. Anything we can't fix on site we will let you know exactly what needs doing and a rough guide to what it should cost at a bike shop.
All our mechanics are friendly and approachable and have a wealth of cycling knowledge so feel free to pick their brains about cycle training or other cycling activities.
We have partnered with Brixton-based upCYCLE to bring you a brand-new type of bike market!
Bring along your outgrown, unwanted bikes to the market, put them to good use and donate them to a great project.
All donated bikes will be serviced by upCYCLE and checked by a qualified mechanic to ensure they are in good working order. The bikes will then be sold at bike markets run by Peddle My Wheels, with 100% of all sales proceeds going back to upCYCLE.
upCYCLE’s mission is simple; they provide free bikes, cycle training and bicycle maintenance workshops for young people from minority ethnic groups.
