We have a West Norwood oriented newsletter this week as a reflection of the West Norwood Volunteer Fair held at West Norwood Libary - a big thank you to all of you who came to visit the wonderful organisations that work in the neighbourhood - here are just a few of the fantastic volunteer opportunities on offer! We will be coming to a neighbourhood near you soon!
The Open Orchard Project is Looking for Volunteers in West Norwood
The Open Orchard Project connects communities through fruit and the planting of fruit trees in public places. These trees provide free fruit to local residents and greenery to our urban environments. "We're a team of volunteers doing our bit to make West Norwood and surrounding areas greener places to live. We meet every Sunday at Bzz Garage on Rothschild Street, 10am-12pm. It's a great way to connect with local people and help keep West Norwood green. Gardening tasks vary, and there is ample opportunity for your own food growing projects. We welcome people of any experience."
As well as the well established Sunday sessions, Open Orchard are looking to fill some specific volunteer roles - Over to Open Orchard!
Project Coordinator
"There are many local greening opportunities that require someone who's looking to own a project and make it come to life. A recent success project is our Gravel Garden on Rothschild Street, which was led by a handful of volunteers. This role requires as much or little time as you feel it needs, and can be done out of office hours. It's a great opportunity to gain project management experience, and make a difference in your local community."
Digital Communications Coordinator (social media, web and email)
"This opportunity is for anyone with a creative flair and some time to spare! Whether you're a seasoned social media manager who wants to help out, or someone looking to gain experience - we need some help keeping our comms active and fresh. This would involve posting on Facebook and Instagram, updating the website, and potentially sending out a monthly newsletter. This is a great volunteer role that doesn't require fixed times, we only ask for minimum one hour a week."
If you are interested in any of Open Orchard's activities - get in touch - they would love to hear from you!
Skilled Volunteering Opportunity - Short Animated Video
Link UP London connects Professional Skills to Good Causes. Get involved in the project based Skilled Volunteering role below and volunteer your knowledge and expertise with a Lambeth based charitable organisation.
Project duration: 48 hours total
Project brief: Cherry Groce Foundation would like to develop animated videos for their school presentations. Previously delivering their content in secondary schools only, they are now also working with primary schools and believe that the content in is not fully accessible for the ages it is presented to. They would like to convert a number of their slides into 2 short animated videos so that it is age appropriate and to help pupils at a younger age digest the information. They have already worked with a Skilled Volunteer to produce colour concepts and storyboards for these, and would now like to make the final step to full animated videos.
Who you’ll be supporting: Cherry Groce Foundation was set up in 2016 in memory of Cherry Groce, a mother, wrongfully shot by the police but who chose to live life to the fullest. They promote justice, build communities, and reduce violence through their advocacy, education and training programmes, and trauma and mediation services.

L’Arche is Looking for Face Painters, (amateur) Photographers, and Old Christmas Decorations for a Disco on 12th December!
L'Arche is a community of people with and without learning disabilities based in West Norwood. They are having a disco for their members and friends on the 12th December 6-9pm in a local venue. It's a costume disco on the theme of the song 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' - they're hoping to have plenty of gold rings, drummers drumming, and partridges in a pear tree!
There will be food, drinks, a photo booth, Christmas tree decorating, face-painting, and lots of dancing. L'Arche is looking for volunteers to help with face-painting and taking photos for the photobooth.
They're also looking for people to donate or lend Christmas decorations like tinsel, baubles, artificial Christmas trees, fairy lights, Santa hats, or dress-up items for the photobooth (hats, funky glasses, props). They're also looking for a clothes rail as well. Anything would be gratefully received!
Sound like fun? Email Mary at L'Arche London if you're able to help.
