Refugees at Home Christmas Card Project
What with the weather this week, Christmas is the *first* thing on eveyone's mind... Well, maybe not, but Refugees at Home are planning ahead...
Refugees at Home connect people with a spare room to refugees and asylum seekers in need of somewhere to stay. They don’t think people who come to the UK for sanctuary should end up on the streets. Their vision is for every refugee and every person seeking asylum to have a safe place to stay.
Each year, Refugees at Home sell their popular holiday cards through an online shop, raising funds for their work at Refugees at Home. They're looking for a regular volunteer who can commit to coming to their office 1-2 days per week in the lead up to Christmas, to pack, send and process orders of cards to those ordering them. You'll be working alongside their staff team in their office, to help dispatch these. The local post office is a short distance away (within 5 minutes' walk) and the kettle is always on in the office!
Activities
- Liaising with printers for delivery of cards
- Processing orders made in online shop
- Packing cards
- Distributing orders
About you
You'll be willing to get stuck in to help, have a good level of written English (you'll be addressing envelopes and reading orders). You'll need to be happy making trips to the (fully accessible) post office a short distance away. They work from the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9am and 6pm.

Could You Help at Black Culture Market - Black History Month Event?
Black Culture Market was established to celebrate black culture and commerce in the local community. The event gives entrepreneurs of all ages of African and Caribbean descent visibility for them to flourish and make cultural products more accessible. With just 0.24% of capital in the UK going to black entrepreneurs (0.02% to black female entrepreneurs) access to early-stage capital is limited. BCM aims to bridge the gap by encouraging communities to shop small with black-owned businesses.
On Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October, Black Culture Market will take place in The Department Store, Brixton from 11am to 5pm (public times), for Black History Month. Plans are in place to make it an even greater success than last year, so there is a lot to do! Black Culture Market needs people who can help set up (Friday 29th September 9.30 am to 1pm), meet and greet guests at reception (Sat 30th Sept - Sun 1st Oct) and/or help pack it away (Sunday 1st Oct).
If you’d like to know more about what is involved please get in touch with Black Culture Market
Hope for the Young are Looking for Refugee and Asylum Seeker Mentors
Established in March 2016, the Mentoring Programme trains volunteer mentors to provide weekly one-to-one support and advice to young refugees and asylum-seekers in line with their goals and aspirations.
Due to the complex social, psychological, and practical challenges many young people face when trying to settle into their new communities, our holistic and youth-focused mentoring approach enables young people to develop the independence skills, support networks, and confidence they need to achieve their full potential.
By becoming a mentor with Hope for the Young, you will have the opportunity to transform a young person’s life in your local community. Our mentors work with their mentees each week to improve their English, enrol in education, access local services and activities, make new friends, and build the confidence and independence skills they need to settle into their new communities and reach their true potential.
If you are passionate about supporting young refugees to rebuild their lives in the UK and think you have what it takes to join the dedicated team of mentors at Hope for the Young, they would love to hear from you!
Share Community Seek Support Worker Volunteers
Share works with disabled people who need extra help and support to realise their dreams and aspirations. They are a centre for learning and wellbeing for adults with learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, mental health and other support needs. Their aim is to help people live happier, healthier, and more independent lives, and make their own choices.
Share Community needs volunteers to join classes and engage with students to help them build confidence and progress towards their goals. You’ll support people to achieve their full potential and increase their self-confidence. Share Community's students welcome volunteers into their sessions with open arms, and we can guarantee you’ll get a real buzz from doing such a rewarding role.
Their classes look at a variety of subjects, including:
- Maths and English - Digital Skills - Catering - Independent Living Skills - Steps into Employment - Health and Wellbeing - Art - Music
They are looking for volunteers to join any and all of their classes, so if you have specific skills, interest, or experience then they'd love to hear from you. Or, if you’re just keen to get involved, they are happy to work together to find a support role that suits you. Get in touch to find out more!
