Council Leader Cllr Claire Holland

Hello,

As many of you will be aware, during August we witnessed two appalling homophobic attacks in our borough.

We want to ensure that this is a borough where all LGBTQ+ people can feel safe without fear of harm or harassment, a commitment particularly crucial in Lambeth as home to London’s largest LGBTQ+ population.

To that end, we have started working more closely with the police, LGBTQ+ venues and local business groups, to provide more support in increasing community safety and resilience following these horrendous attacks. We are also offering training for staff at LGBTQ+ venues to make sure they can spot hostile behaviour in advance, plus further training in how to support a victim or reduce harm in cases of identity-based harassment or violence.

Such dreadful attacks on any member of our community in Lambeth has no place, and we will continue our work in making Lambeth a safer place for all.

Councillor Claire Holland, Lambeth Council Leader

On Monday, 4 September, we launched a new trial low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) in Brixton Hill. The LTN is designed to make the neighborhood safer, healthier, and more climate resilient. As part of our engagement, we held an online Q&A session in August for local people to ask us questions. To find out more about the scheme read our FAQs booklet.

Zero tolerance for homophobic hate crime

We have sadly seen two shocking homophobic attacks in our borough in August. The recent stabbing of two men at the Two Brewers in Clapham was followed last week by an appalling assault of two men in Brixton. In response, the council’s public protection officers have been out in the streets talking to local people and listening to their concerns. Anyone with information should come forward to help us find the people who committed these crimes.
