Welcome to Lambeth Libraries annual Young People’s Readers and Writers Festival 2023.
Join us - we have a bumper programme of events and activities for all the kids throughout the summer.
Ready, Set, Read, Summer Reading Challenge events are taking place in all our libraries throughout the summer. Events include designing your own sports kit or winning medals, making Pom-Poms or lollipop animation sport stars! Every week they'll be a new activity with a summer sports theme for 4 to 12 year olds - Join the fun this summer!

A ground-breaking new series for children aged 6 to 9, which sees leading experts including Deborah Meaden, James May and Dr Ronx introduce curious young minds to hot topics. Year groups 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The Brixton Immortals Domino Club will be giving you an opportunity to learn how to play dominoes and the skills you need to win. This is a great way to get children engaging in maths and probability while having fun – and a good social game for adults too. Come along for a fun afternoon.

Join Colette and be inspired to produce your own zine in this workshop; it can be about anything you want: a fanzine about your favourite things, collage images about yourself, stories and comic strips. We’ll have craft materials and prompts to get you started! You’ll be able to take 5 copies of your zine home with you to share your publication with friends and family. Ages 6 plus

Based on her book LOUD, author Rose Robbins will host a fun interactive musical themed workshop. Using basic relief printing techniques, you will create and design your own album cover of your favourite artist, music or group. Ages 7 plus.

Children will love these storytelling sessions, specially developed for those with additional needs. Library staff use Bag Books sensory props to tell stories. At the end of the session all children will receive this year’s summer reading challenge themed- Ready, Set, Read rewards. Ages 5 plus

Meet Tracey Hammett, the writer of Bob the Dog Gets a Job, in this workshop based on her latest book. Craft your own fantastical ice-cream creations. Will they be delicious, magical or maybe even wonderfully weird? Ages 4 to 8.
Learn about the scientific principles behind paper marbling in this interactive workshop with The Imperial College London and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Ages 8+

Are you a young entrepreneur wanting to set up a business or require business advice? Lambeth Libraries has teamed up with social enterprise organisation Community Spark Change (CSC) to run a business start-up programme under their Block Change programme for young people. This is a 12-week programme beginning in June. Ages 14 to 25.

Plastic Mountain is launching a public art installation on the 30 June in West Norwood. The installation is a mound with plastic waste in its layers, which will erode and reveal the plastic. The sculpture will contrast the natural and the artificial. You are invited to help make the installation by adding earth and plastic. You don't need any previous experience, all materials and tools will be provided, just bring your enthusiasm and creativity! You can sign up on their website plasticmountain.org.
If you are over 18 and on a low income you can now apply for a free SIM card to help you connect digitally. SIM cards are offered by Vodaphone, Three and O2 and eligible people can collect one on a Tuesday 11am to 1pm at Clapham Library. SW4 7DB.
Art Exhibitions

The 2023 Brixton Blog & Bugle summer art show promises to be the biggest and best yet. Supported by the Arts Council we are planning to show the work of over 50 local artists. Expect a huge variety of subjects. Equally varied are the media - traditional painted canvases sit alongside digital art, photography, and collage.
The show is a testimony to the breadth and depth of creative talent which exists in and around Brixton. And to make things more interesting, there will be a people’s vote to select the winner.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of SS Windrush, we have a major new photographic exhibition at Clapham Library. It has been created by award-winning local social documentary photographer, Jim Grover, who created and exhibited the critically acclaimed, ‘Windrush: Portrait of a Generation’. www.jimgroverphotography.com
