Lambeth Country Show 2023 – Three takeaways from the Recycling Outreach team

Lambeth country show

Dear resident,

We would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who attended the Lambeth Country Show this year! Our Waste Management Outreach team had a wonderful time engaging with over 230 people during the event.

For those who couldn't make it, we've summarised some of the frequently asked questions and key takeaways from our conversations with residents at the show below:

Can I request more council-provided clear recycling sacks?

We received a lot of interest from residents regarding the availability of clear recycling sacks. The good news is that for many properties, clear recycling sacks are not necessary for recycling. All you need to do is ensure that your recyclable items are clean, dry, and loose, and place them directly into your green recycling bin.

If you prefer to store your recycling in your home before taking it out, you can use a hard plastic container or a separate bin. However, please note that specific exceptions apply for properties such as flats above shops that present waste directly onto the street. In these cases, residents can use clear recycling sacks and should receive regular deliveries.

To determine your collection type, you can use the resource available on Lambeth's website here.

Does my recycling really get recycled?

We understand that there are concerns about the fate of our recycling and whether it actually gets recycled. We assure you that the Western Riverside Waste Authority, the centralised waste and recycling facility for Lambeth and other boroughs, sends the collected dried mixed recycling to processors across the UK and Europe for manufacturing into new items.

Furthermore, Lambeth's general waste is sent to the waste-to-energy plant in Belvedere, where it is converted into electricity to power thousands of homes. For more detailed information, please visit their website here.

Where can I recycle small electrical items and batteries?

small electricals

We would like to remind residents that small electrical items can be recycled conveniently at your doorstep if you have a green wheelie bin.

Simply place your small electrical items in a carrier bag, tie it securely, and position it on top of your recycling bin during collection day. We also collect batteries, but please ensure they are placed in a separate carrier bag. Our dedicated crew will ensure proper collection and recycling. For more information, please visit Lambeth's website.
