Building a sustainable Lambeth 🌳

Love Lambeth email header

Claire

Hello,

We have big plans for Lambeth when it comes to planting more trees and greening our neighbourhoods and streets. Last year, we announced that over the next few years, we will plant over 5,000 trees in the borough. Trees provide vital shade during the summer months, protect us from flooding and are vital habitants for so many animals in our urban area.

In the next couple of months, we will be bringing forward a new Urban Forest Strategy which will lay out how we will prioritise where we plant the new trees. Our strategy will show how we will do this equitably – focusing first on areas with higher stressors such as deprivation, poor air quality or areas that feel the effects of heat the most. This month alone we planted over 300 new trees, with thousands more on their way.

Cllr Chowdhury was busy at a planting day for Deronda Estate TRA last Saturday as part of our ‘Bee Roads’ programme – our programme of converting verges and other spaces into pollinator havens, supporting our bees, insects and butterflies to thrive. You can read about how we are protecting our wildlife and aiming to grow our pollinator population in our Pollinator Action Plan.

Today, we announced that Lambeth's new Borough Plan ‘Lambeth 2030: Our Future, Our Lambeth’ is going to Cabinet on 27 March for approval. We have been working with partners, local organisations, and residents to decide our shared ambitions for the next 7 years. These are:

  • Making Lambeth Neighbourhoods Fit for the Future
  • Making Lambeth One of the Safest Boroughs in London
  • Making Lambeth A Place We Can All Call Home.
