Lambeth's LGBTQ+ History Month begins 🎉🏳️‍🌈

Claire

Hello,

The recent Census showed that Lambeth has the largest LGBTQ+ population anywhere in London. But the LGBTQ+ community is not new to Lambeth – our borough has a long and proud history with the community, from the beloved Royal Vauxhall Tavern to the 1970s home of the Gay Liberation Front – and much more!

That’s why LGBTQ+ History Month is so important here in Lambeth. Throughout February, we have a fantastic series of events planned with Lambeth Libraries happening across the borough. The programme focuses on equality and diversity, as well as giving us all an insight into the contributions the LGBTQ+ community has made – and goes on making – in our borough. Find and sign up to events below.

From art and poetry to a discussion on the secret gay language of Polari and an arts and craft fair – there’s something for everyone and I hope you can join us.

Lambeth Council leaders visit West Dulwich Ward

Yesterday, our Council Leader, Cllr Claire Holland and Chief Executive Bayo Dosunmu continued their tour of visiting wards across the borough. This time they took a trip to the West Dulwich Ward. On their visit, they met with residents and businesses to hear more about the challenges they face and the inspiring work they do. This included meeting residents who volunteer for the Sustainable School Run initiative, to find out more about the work they’re doing to make the journey to school safer for pupils by reducing air pollution.

They went on to visit the Aspire Wellbeing Centre which provides a range of services for adults with physical, sensory, and learning disabilities. They heard about some of their amazing initiatives like their health gym, their new partnership with OFSTED, and various activity programmes. On the visit they were kindly joined by wards councillors, Cllr Cowell, and Cllr Cavanagh.

Lambeth proposes emissions-based parking charges

Lambeth Council is considering the introduction of a new emissions-based charging structure for parking permits. This could see prices to park in Lambeth rise for drivers of the highest polluting vehicles. The changes are part of our commitment to improve air quality and create a fairer, more equal borough. And follows on from our recent announcement of the launch of our new ground breaking Kerbside Strategy.

Walkers outside of Kennington Tube station

Lambeth community members mark Great Mental Health Day with a walk

To mark Great Mental Health Day last Friday, we invited local people to join us on a walk across the borough. The walk was a great way to improve their wellbeing and discover new places.

The theme for the day was the power of community kindness. During the walk, which started at Kennington Station, they visited local organisations that show kindness to our communities. This included a stop off at Bee Urban, the Health and Wellbeing Bus outside St Marks Church, We Are 336 in Brixton for a mindfulness session. The walk ended at Brixton Windmill for the Joy of Sound a music and dance session.

As part of the day, Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities, Cllr Jim Dickson gave BIGKID a shoutout for showing kindness to our community in Railton Road.
