A Happy New Year from Lambeth Libraries - Events January 2023

open-to-discovery
2023

A Happy New Year from all here at Lambeth Libraries. We hope the New Year will bring you happiness and, of course, you find some great reading from your local library.

Library latest...

Durning Library has reopened again with a new boiler in place. The disability access work is still ongoing so the scaffolding will remain in place a little longer.
We know many people will want to spend a little more time at their local library during the winter to save on those energy bills. Lambeth has recently completed work to improve the heating at Durning, Tate South Lambeth, Streatham and Brixton. Lambeth Libraries are part of the warm places network being provided by Lambeth Council.

Lambeth Archives is closed to get ready to move to its new site in 2023. It will reopen in its new home in the summer of 2023. We know that such a long closure, which is necessary for moving these unique documents may disappoint many of you, so to help you while away, until we reopen we have arranged a subscription to The British Newspaper Archive, which has newspapers dating from the 1700s and also Findmypast Worldwide with access to the 1921 census. These will be available in every Lambeth Library.

Zoey Dixon

We are delighted that our librarian Zoey Dixon has been awarded a Medal of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours list which marks the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK. Her work in Lambeth and beyond and a track record of achievement are all celebrated with the award. She has been particularly active in her work with Black and LGBTQ+ authors to help improve diversity and representation in public libraries. She also sits on many of the national book award panels for children and young people.

After last year’s great success, Brixton library will again be hosting an exhibition showcasing photographic work by those who have been affected by homelessness.

Twelve participants from the RPS/Cafe Art mentoring group, who meet up several times a month to improve their photographic skills with the help of mentors from the Royal Photographic society, were asked to submit a panel of 4 photographs representing their style of photography. This has resulted in bodies of work which helps showcase the personalities of the photographers as well as providing a wonderful variety of 48 images in total.

The objective of the RPS/Cafe Art group is to help the well being and confidence of those who have been affected by homelessness through photography and this exhibition plays an important part in enabling this.
