Fair pay for everyone in Lambeth

Love Lambeth email header

Cllr Claire Holland, Lambeth Council Leader

Hello,

We are committed to making sure that everyone in Lambeth earns a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. And we are making that happen by supporting businesses across our borough to become accredited London Living Wage Employers – ensuring that staff in those businesses are guaranteed to earn at least the London Living Wage.

Ensuring that people in Lambeth earn a decent wage has never been more important. The cost of living crisis is forcing households across Lambeth to make every pound stretch further and further. By securing the London Living Wage for every worker in Lambeth, we can help ease the impact of the rising cost of living.

This Living Wage Week, I am delighted that we can celebrate that Lambeth’s big three NHS Trusts and more than 230 local businesses are now accredited London Living Wage employers. As a result, thousands of people in Lambeth have had their pay lifted to a real London living wage rate. Find out more.

A Lambeth Council funded programme has supported 10 low carbon start-up businesses to develop their Net Zero ideas while helping to create 16 new jobs. The Lambeth Net Zero Programme has been working with the low carbon businesses to develop their ideas to provide a practical way to reduce carbon emissions and help the transition towards Net Zero. It has led to the creation of 10 full time jobs and six part-time jobs, as well as helping the start-ups secure over £1million in funding through equity investment, crowdfunding, innovation grants and debt finance.

Lambeth Leaders visit the Knights Hill Ward community

Last Tuesday, Lambeth Leader, Cllr Claire Holland, and our Chief Executive, Bayo Dosunmu came to Knights Hill Ward, as part of their visits to every ward in Lambeth. They were kindly hosted by ward councillors Meldrum and Adem. As part of the visit, they met with estate residents to hear the challenges they face and with young people at West Norwood Library. They also stopped by at some of our vital local youth support services such as Centre 70 and the Old Library. They met with the staff there who shared more about the important work they do to care for and inspire the young people that come through their doors.

Lambeth calls on the Government to protect vital frontline services

Lambeth Council has written to the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt calling on the government to do more to protect local services in Lambeth. We have expressed our serious concerns about the impacts of government cuts on our communities, especially during the cost of living crisis. We're working with our partners to provide support to our residents during this time, but without further government action more families will fall into poverty this year.

Things you can do to stay well this winter

Lambeth Together has shared tips to help you stay well this winter. Cold and damp weather can cause and worsen health issues, especially for those aged over 65. That’s why it’s good to be prepared if you or others in your household become unwell. Some of the steps you can take to look out for yourself, and others include keeping medicines stocked up at home, checking in on others, keeping warm and staying active where possible.

Black Health and Wellbeing Day event

Lambeth's holds second Black Health and Wellbeing Day – watch the event video

In October, we held our second Black Communities Health and Wellbeing Day event. It was great to have people from our communities join us for free health checks and, tasty African and Caribbean food. On the day, health experts were on hand to give blood pressure checks and health advice on a range of topics including spotting the early signs of cancer and diabetes. Watch our short video to see how the day went.

Durning Library

Durning Library to close for three weeks for improvement works

Durning Library in Kennington will be closed to the public from 22 November to 9 December. The planned closure is taking place for improvement works to be completed. This includes installing a new platform lift, so that the front entrance is accessible to all users. A new boiler will also be installed to heat the building better during the colder periods. As the library is a Grade II listed building, it has been important to retain the beautiful features of the building. The work required is challenging and to undertake it safely the library will need to close for just under three weeks.
