Government must freeze the energy price cap

Love Lambeth email header

Cllr Claire Holland, leader of Lambeth Council

Hello,

Today, it has been announced that the energy price cap will rise to a staggering £3,549 on 1st October. Households in every corner of our borough are already having to make impossible choices between paying their energy bills and putting food on the table, and this price cap rise will only make it more difficult to make ends meet.

At the council, we are committed to taking whatever action we can to help people through these difficult times. As well as direct financial support for those most at risk, we are providing advice to residents and businesses, including on how to improve energy efficiency, and we are working with Lambeth’s foodbanks to ensure every family has enough food to eat

But the only way this crisis is going to be averted is through action in Westminster or else many families will face poverty and extreme hardship this winter. That’s whywe are calling for immediate government action to freeze the price cap for households and emergency support for small businesses facing crippling energy bills.

Celebrating GCSE results day success

GCSE results day

Pupils across the borough collected their GCSE exams results yesterday, following a period of extended disruption to their study due to Covid-19 restrictions. We caught up with students at City Heights Academy in Tulse Hill,

Azzizah Ibrahim, 16, received five A-star and four A grade GCSE results. She said: “I’m surprised how well I’ve done. I studied hard, but you never know how the marking going to go.

“This school has improved so much and I’m so grateful for the support I’ve got from all the staff here. My parents were waiting outside the school this morning for my results, and were so happy and shocked at how I’ve done.

“I’ve always wanted to been a doctor, and I hope this is a good first step on that path.”

Responding to new IOPC findings into the death of Ian Taylor

Cllr Mahamed Hashi, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, has described the recent findings of the Independent Office for Police Conduct into the death of Ian Taylor in custody 'deeply disappointing'

The report concluded no indication ‘that any person serving with the police may have committed a criminal offence or behaved in a manner that would justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings’.

Councillor Hashi said:

"This latest announcement is deeply disappointing, and makes very clear that much more must be done to change the culture of policing. At Lambeth Council we are already working hard to improve public accountability when it comes to policing the borough, whether that be around stop and search or how the police engage with local communities following incidents in their area.

“But it must be backed up by the Met responding to being put in special measures by developing new and better ways of engaging with communities, becoming more transparent and more reflective of the diverse city it seeks to serve.”

Lambeth calls on Chancellor for urgent action on the cost of living crisis

Front-line services that millions of people depend on could be under threat if the Government doesn’t provide more help for local councils, Lambeth has warned the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nadim Zahawi MP. Councillor David Amos, Cabinet Member for Finance and Cost of Living highlighted the need for funding certainty for local government so we can protect our front-line services that so many of our residents rely on. These include children’s social care, adult social care, and support for homeless people. Cllr Amos said spiralling inflation, driven in part by factors including the pandemic, and the war in Ukraine, meant “many families already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis face a bleak winter of rising prices and bills with little help from the government”.
