Daily Host Volunteer at 575 Wandsworth Road
Daily Host Volunteer is an exciting new role in which volunteers will have the wonderful opportunity to provide tours for visitors at 575 Wandsworth Road, a beautiful and unique National Trust property.
575 Wandsworth Road was acquired by the National Trust in 2010, because of the rich and striking interiors created by Khadambi Asalache (1935-2006), a Kenyan-born poet, novelist, philosopher of mathematics and British civil servant. He bought the house in 1981 while working at the Treasury, and over a period of 20 years (from 1986) turned his home into a work of art.
What’s involved?
Providing visitors with tours around the property three times a day, one day a week (either a Thursday or a Friday)
Looking out for ways to do the little things that make a big difference
Supporting our visitors by providing them with information and guidance so they get the most from their time with us
Responding to situations to ensure we always provide a great experience for people – and spotting issues before they happen
Gathering comments and feedback by chatting to visitors so that we can continually improve.

Give street trees a drink!
An unusual volunteer request - but none less urgent for it! Our street trees need you...
Lambeth Council has planted hundreds of new trees on streets over recent years. They don’t have rich fertile soil to grow into, and even when rain soaks our streets, it doesn’t soak into the ground for them to drink up slowly – it runs quickly into the drains.
(Giving) back to nature
It’s easy to give something back to the trees that protect our environment– just twice a week, take out a couple of big jugs of water or a bucket and slowly give your neighbourhood tree a drink. Trees are (as you might expect) environmentally friendly and like recycled water – from a bath, washing up, or rain barrel.
- Some young trees have a watering pipe, pour half the water down that and the other half onto the tree
- Some have a watering bag – just fill it up.
Share the water
If you share a tree with next door, invite your neighbours to take it in turns, and both water your trees once a week. If you walk past a tree every day, put a message on your street’s Whatsapp? or Facebook group about a rota to get all the trees in the street watered when our weather isn’t going to it for them.
