Lambeth: a borough of opportunities for all 🏆

Claire

Hello,

Football is finally coming home thanks to our amazing England Lionesses winning Euro 2022. Their achievement has inspired a generation of young women and girls, and we want to harness that inspiration through our work to open up opportunity and access to sport for children and young people.

It is our ambition that every neighbourhood in Lambeth will have good quality turn-up- and-play sports facilities that are free to local children and young people, like the recently installed Dynamos Cricket Wicket on the Mawby Brough Estate, supported by Sky Sports, ECB, and the council.

Whilst we are working to bring new facilities to Lambeth and improve existing ones, we are also supporting programmes for children and young people to get involved and try new things – such as our Summer of Food and Fun Programme. Throughout the school holidays we are putting on a wide variety of fun physical activities for families with children eligible for free school meals, in every corner of Lambeth.

Councillor Claire Holland, Lambeth Council Leader

Celebrating our amazing parks and green spaces

We’re thrilled to have recently been awarded 22 prestigious green flags for our wonderful parks and green spaces, topping last year’s record of 19. The flags were awarded by Keep Britain Tidy and the Government to highlight and celebrate the contribution parks make towards tackling climate change and our health and wellbeing, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last week, we were delighted to hold the Green Flag Awards ceremony at Lambeth Town Hall to celebrate parks across Lambeth and other parts of the country being awarded green flags.

Swift bird flying in sky

Supporting the Swift bird population to thrive

To help protect the Swift bird population, which is under threat, we put up some new swift boxes in Lambeth cemetery last month. The installation of the boxes in the borough is part of our commitment to tackle climate change by protecting wildlife and supporting biodiversity. It also tied in with UK Swift Awareness Week, which aims to educate people about the at-risk birds and how we can help them to thrive in today’s landscape.

New planning applications services now online

New online services launched to improve the planning application experience for residents

In partnership with other local authority’s and the department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities, we’ve now launched new online services on the Lambeth website to improve our residents experience when submitting a planning application. The new services will make the process simpler, more efficient and could help to save households money by reducing the number of invalid applications.
