Become an Outings Companion for a Blind Veteran
Blind Veterans UK Write: Our 33-year-old veteran has recently moved back to his hometown of London and would like more opportunities to get out and become more familiar with the local area and community.
He’s very active, likes to keep fit, trains Boxing and enjoys outdoor sports. Regarding his National Service, this Member was posted to Afghanistan in 2009.
Our blind veteran is looking for a lively male driver (essential) volunteer to guide him on social activities in the local area once a week for a maximum of 3 hours.
He needs someone with good knowledge of Lambeth and the surrounding area who can suggest activities in the veteran’s neighbourhood. Maybe a coffee, maybe a trip to the barbers, helping with a shopping experience or attending a one-off event.
The right person has to be very good at respecting policies, procedures and boundaries, with a good conversation and a strong personality to bounce off and cope with our Member’s banter! And to be able to befriend someone who experiences some anxiety. Does this sound like you?
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veteran’s home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. As understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
