Welcome to the Lambeth Libraries Children and Young People’s Readers and Writers Festival 2022. We have a bumper programme of events and activities beginning in June where we celebrate the rich diversity of Lambeth by including Refugee Week, Empathy Day, Windrush Day and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

We also have another full month of events and activities online and in-person for all ages to enjoy- all free unless listed.

Do come into your local library and see us - we have a huge variety of new books - have a check on the catalogue for new titles.

Do you enjoy football and want a chance to borrow a good quality football? Lambeth Libraries are excited to have teamed up with the Alive and Kicking Organisation and registered libraries have become an official @weareakuk Football Library! From Monday 6 June you can borrow a football for one week at our participating Libraries. You will need to be a library member to borrow a football. If you are not a library member do not worry, it’s easy to join.

Lambeth Libraries bring you some great children's authors to read to children and have fun with crafts. Author Stephanie Ward tells the story of Arabella and the Magic Pencil (14 June) at 10am Brixton Library, followed by a special craft event; author Anya Glazer gives a fantastic reading of Otter Vs Badgers (16 June) at 10.30am Upper Norwood Library and award-winning illustrator Leigh Hodgkinson leads a Martha Maps it Out Storytelling and Workshop session (29 June) 11am South Lambeth Library.

Readers and Writers - A month of visiting authors...

Fiction Writers

Throughout June we have some great writers visiting Lambeth Libraries both in person and virtually, here's a taste of June’s highlights:

For Fiction lovers you are in for a treat with Internationally bestselling crime author Karen Rose (6 June) talking online about her latest novel Quarter to Midnight and the amazing Leila Mottley (14 June) in the UK from Oakland, California, to discuss Nightcrawling at Brixton Library – her book already marked as a must-read of 2022. During June we also have Gerald Jacobs (14 June) at Carnegie Library on Pomeranski – a slice of south London life and authors West Camel and David F Ross (17 June) are in Conversation at South Lambeth Library.

For those interested in short stories, plays and biography then we have that covered too: poet Helen Bowell (8 June) brings the City of Stories short story project to a finale at Streatham Library with a writing taster session and readings; local playwrights, Sandra Wareham, Marilyn Rogers, Sheila Rose and others read excerpts from their plays at Brixton Library in Neighbourhood Voices (15 June) and biographers Marion Molteno, Helen Marquard and Caroline Studdert bring the month to a conclusion with Women who've written books about interesting Women (28 June) at Clapham Library.

Windrush Day 2022

Windrush grouped

Windrush Day is celebrated each year on 22 June. In Lambeth Libraries we have a whole programme of events at Brixton Library to discuss the lives of the Windrush Generation, their struggles and triumphs.

We kick off with A Windrush Story with author Tony Fairweather (16 June) where Tony launches his new book, Twenty-Eight Pounds Ten Shillings - A Windrush Story. The week proper then gets going with An Evening with Dr Velma McClymont (20 June) discussing writing and her novel Little River, then Tony Cealy bring us Windrush Playback Stories (21 June) and the week concludes with a fantastic performance of Legacy and Hope by Pegasus Opera (25 June).

City Reels: Lambeth Field Recording Club

City Reels

City Reels is a summer workshop for people living in Lambeth to gather, learn and develop different types of field recording skills. Over four sessions, we will make our own field recordings of the local area, try out different kinds of microphones and experiment with alternative methods of listening. Each session will take a different theme and skill, and there will be plenty of time to discuss and share our sound recordings over light refreshments at the end.

An exhibition of painting by non-figurative Brixton based artist Marion Jones who sadly died recently. The title comes from a recurrent argument. Whenever people commented on her works, Jones would say: “They’re NOT geometry – they are about layering and colour and contrast…”. And she was right, of course…
