February is LGBTQ+ History Month
Welcome to Lambeth Libraries annual LGBTQ+ History Month festival full of events and activities throughout the borough... Join us for a free screening of the thrilling documentary, Rebel Dykes, about south London’s 80s dyke culture, told by those who lived it, followed by discussion with film participants.
Saturday 5 February, 12pm to 4.30pm Brixton Library. SW2 1JQ
A zine and small publishing fair of LGBTQ+ makers, artists and writers. From Holy Titclamps and Homocore, to Red Hanky Panky and Nancy, LGBTQ+ zines have been popular since the days of punk! With a burgeoning current scene, we welcome dozens of zinesters and queer distros to Brixton Library. All welcome.
Throughout February we have some great writers visiting Lambeth Libraries both in person and virtually, here's a taste:
Paul Burston (8 February, Carnegie Library) founder of London’s award-winning LGBT+ literary salon and The Polari Book Prize, discusses his latest thriller The Closer I Get. Queer Alphabet Soup (16 February, Tate South Lambeth Library) is a fantastic evening of readings, poetry and performance from literary queer novelists, poets and writers in the heart of Vauxhall and Paul Baker (28 February, Online) discusses his latest book, Outrageous! The Story of Section 28 and Britain’s Battle for LGBT Education.
Lambeth Links and CliniQ open a discussion on The Future for Trans Health (9 February, Brixton Library) and, on the anniversary of Europride 1992 taking place in our own Brockwell Park, we bring together those that set it up and participated in Absolutely Proud (12 February, Online). Lambeth Links tie up with the Leonard Cheshire charity to host a LGBTQ+ Disability Forum (19 February, Brixton Library) and Lambeth AgeUK open a discussion with Lawyer and Activist, Maurice Tomlinson on the fight to Eradicate Homophobic Legislation in the Caribbean (23 February, Online). Mapping Queer Lambeth (27 February, Brixton Library) charts Lambeth’s rich Queer history through the physical buildings, spaces and spots across the borough... and asks for your knowledge of more.
Our reading groups are hosting some great book discussions this month, in particular The Radical Readers will be discussing The Transgender Issue by Shon Faye (11 February, Brixton Library) and our LGBTQ+ book club discuss Close to the Knives: A Memoir of Disintegration by David Wojnarowicz (25 February, Online).
Of course LGBTQ+ History Month is for everyone, and all ages, and we also have a programme for children with stories of equality, diversity and understanding during our Library under 5 sessions, as well as very special Drag Queen Storytimes.

Our Collective Voice Photovoice exhibition is the original work of 11 Photovoice Co-Researchers from Lambeth and other boroughs, designed to develop new understandings of the experiences and needs of under-represented communities.

Thursday 17 February, 7pm Online Event: Booking via Eventbrite
Join Lambeth Archives for another online history talk. This month an illustrated talk by local historian Alyson Wilson exploring how Clapham participated in and was affected by the second world war. The talk will include information on deep shelters and anti-aircraft defence, as well as bomb damage to the local area.

Local author Naomi Clifford, whose latest book Under Fire explores the Blitz diaries of a debutante ambulance driver in Chelsea, looks at the work of men and women who volunteered for the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service, and identifies ambulance crews operating in Lambeth.

Join us for a free online BSL interpreted City of Stories Home writing workshop with writer Helen Bowell, Celebrating London’s libraries as places to make and share stories.
Taking place across London between February – June 2022, City of Stories Home is a creative reading and writing programme in the heart of local communities. It will find aspiring local writers and introduce new stories from diverse writers to audiences in library reading groups and at events.

Come and join wellbeing specialists Carers4Carers at their Community Wellbeing 4 U event and get a free health check, massage, fitness class or specialist advice and information.

There is a justified demand to stop placing the onus on women to protect themselves against harassment, misogyny & violence. Tackling male violence against women needs to focus on the origin - men. Needless to say, it's not all men but it is predominantly men.
A timely conversation exploring the need to shift the responsibility of women's safety to a more fundamental approach from London South Bank University.

Children aged 11 to 14 can hear from authors Sita Brahmachari and Anthony Kessel during this free virtual event for schools, hosted by The Reading Agency and National Literacy Trust for Children’s Mental Health Week. The panel will discuss various aspects of young people's mental health, the benefits of reading in supporting wellbeing and how they explore this complex subject through their writing.
