Welcome to Lambeth Libraries annual Black History Month festival full of events and activities throughout the borough... Below are only a small selection of the 30+ events happening during the month - for a full programme, download the brochure.

Join us for the live launch of the Cane Warriors paperback. At this special event Alex Wheatle will read with drumming accompaniment by Ras Farai of the Buru Drummers.

Throughout October we have some great writers visiting Lambeth Libraries both in person and virtually, here's a taste:
For Fiction lovers its on Zoom but you are in for a treat with Abi Daré (13 October) discussing one of the most loved books of the year! The Girl With The Louding Voice, Celeste Mohammed (18 October) for a night in Trinidad via the lives of the Pleasantview people, already lauded as a landmark work in international fiction and YA authors Yaba Badoe, Reni K. Amayo and Ciannon Smart (21 October) discussing their work, inspiration, influences, culture and myth in fantasy fiction.
For those interested in true life and information then we have that covered too: Lee Lawrence (12 October) discusses his award-winning biography and the event that changed Brixton forever - the police shooting of Cherry Groce, Saskia Calliste and Zainab Raghdo discuss all things Hair in Hairvolution! (19 October) and Big Joanie's Steph Phillips on why Solange Matters: Why Music Matters! (25 October).
Brixton's Radical Readers book group discuss The Life, Politics and Legacies of Thomas Sankara (8 October), art curator Lisa Anderson is in conversation with Artist Kimathi Donkor (12 October) about representation, inspiration and Kimathi's exhibition, showing at Brixton Library during October. The Windrush is discussed both in the The Windrush Trades Person Project (20 October), looking at the trades of those that came and their descendants and in Tony Cealy's Human Library Windrush Performance (28 October). The month wraps up with the LGBTQ+ Reading group discussing Jay Bernard's Surge (29 October), a fearless poetic exploration of the New Cross Fire... and a night celebrating Black British Women in Theatre during the 80s and 90s - Coming Together, Growing Together - featuring Munirah Theatre Company with writer Nicola Abram (30 October).
October is crammed full of things to enjoy, check out Kimathi Donkor's fantastic exhibition - The Notebook Series: Celebrating young women in South London at Brixton Library, walk in the footsteps of Chartist leader William Cuffay and abolitionist Robert Wedderburn with the Friends of Kennington Park (9 October), get involved with the Brixton Library Black Business fair (21 October)
Of course Black History Month is for everyone and all ages, this year we have a packed programme for children.

Kemi Bamgbose discusses her new book When Mr Mandela Came to Town (4 October), Akitoye Sunday hosts an interactive storytelling session, debuting her first picture book Tiana Eat Up (25 October), CBeebies Jo Jo and Gran Gran author Laura Henry-Allain MBE visits Brixton Library (26 October), Baller Boys author Venessa Taylor leads a great workshop for kids (26 October) and Coco Girl Awesome Hair author Serlina Boyd (30 October) will be celebrating her magazines and new book... wow... packed...

Explore Learning Brixton, in collaboration with Lambeth Libraries, is offering a free workshop this October to celebrate National Poetry Day!
We will be hosting our Haiku Poems workshop with children in Years 5,6 & 7 invited to come along and embrace your poetic talents!
We'll be sharing thoughts and ideas as well as writing our very own Haiku Poem in celebration of National Poetry Day. We look forward to seeing you all there!
Monday 4 October National Libraries week runs from 4th to 10th of October and this year we are all asked to #ShareTheChange, to celebrate much-loved libraries and the vital role they play in supporting active and engaged communities. You are invited to take part in CILIP’s photo campaign to get the nation sharing stories of the change the library has made to your life or how the library has enabled you to make a positive impact on your community.

Poles Connect and Streatham Library invite children together with carers for an evening event as part of the 6th Polish edition of the Night in the Library at Streatham Library.
Meet Katarzyna Jackowska-Enemuo - singer, storyteller and author of the book Weaver of Clouds, a story of love, emotions and courage, beautifully illustrated by Marianna Sztya. Katarzyna will tell a fairy tale she wrote for young and big children and their loved ones, followed by an interactive drawing workshop. Participants will receive the book Cloud Weaver.
The event is part of Poles in South London - Local Heroes Archive, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London. The number of places is limited. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact polesinsouthlondon@gmail.com.
To celebrate the publication of R.J. Palacio's new book Pony, Puffin have an exciting new competition. Children need to look at the mysterious photograph above and tell us about the woman in the picture. Winners will receive a copy of Pony and the best-selling Wonder. Find out how to enter here.
#TogetherWeRead, a digital book club connecting readers to the same ebook and audiobook at the same time with no waitlists or holds. The featured title is Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro download it from Libby with your Lambeth Library card before 13 October.

Have you ever wanted to write a play? Black Gay Ink is a creative writing development scheme for emerging Black gay writers.
Apply for this year-long programme of free workshops and masterclasses tailored specifically for Black gay men, aimed at developing your writing and knowledge of the publishing industry. All workshops and masterclasses will be held via Zoom or at Brixtonhouse theatre, and will culminate in a new playwrighting showcase event at Brixtonhouse in South London. The main festival day programme takes in two literary walks around Clapham Common, led by local authors, crime fiction writer Julie Anderson at 2pm and prize-winning novelist Annemarie Neary at 3.30pm. In addition, there will be two live author events at the Omnibus Theatre. The first speaker will be multiple award-winning Sir Michael Morpurgo at 5.30pm followed by Radio 4's Ed Stourton at 7pm. |
