Hi everyone – you won’t be surprised that the focus on Christmas volunteering is increasing, including an ever-growing need for donations as well as volunteer support. We’re highlighting one particularly seasonal need this week: the Norwood and Brixton Foodbank urgently need food donations; they have seen a massive surge in referrals and stock on their shelves is low. If you can, please have a look at what they currently need most and where to donate here: https://norwoodbrixton.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/
Meanwhile, the need for volunteers is growing across the board. Even award-winning services like the Loughborough Community Centre at Max Roach, where the Adventure Playground is co-winner of this year’s London Play Awards need your help. LCC@Max Roach – Website Developer
LCC@Max Roach is a safe place in Brixton where all members of the local community can come together to learn, thrive and succeed. Through meaningful activities, LCC supports and enables local children, young people and residents living in poverty, and with other disadvantages. LCC runs Rosebuds Preschool (2–4 yrs), Holiday Play Project (0-13 yrs) and LEAP Community Engagement (0-3 yrs). To keep up with the variety of activities run all through the year, they really need someone who can update their website and give it a fresh, new look – please let us know if you can help LCC.

Age UK – MyHoHoHo Christmas Dinners
This year has been tough for everyone and has led to most of us experiencing isolation and separation ourselves, but for some elderly members of the community this is their everyday life. This year Age UK want to spread a little cheer to those who will be spending Christmas alone, and are looking for volunteers who can simply cook an extra meal and deliver it to someone who will be completely on their own for Christmas day. Whatever you’re cooking on the day, whether it be turkey with all the trimmings or another meal, could you cook an extra portion and take it to someone who is on their own? Age UK will match you with someone local (walking distance) and supply a bag of seasonal goodies for them, dropped off to you in advance. They will even supply the plate! Please let us know if you can help Age UK.
Norwood and Brixton Foodbank – Cargo Bikers
The foodbank would love to hear from anyone who has a cargo bike and could volunteer for deliveries local to SW2 on 21st, 22nd or 23rd December, working from St. Margaret the Queen in Streatham Hill. They’re hoping to fill 2-hour shifts, starting at 10am on Monday 21st, and 9am on Tuesday 22nd and Weds 23rd, anytime up to about 4pm. Foodbank referrals have gone through the roof in recent weeks - all offers for any 2 hours on those days would be very gratefully taken up. Have cargo bike, will travel?
Home-Start Lambeth
Home-Start Lambeth’s aim is to prevent the challenges of poverty, neglect and isolation from compromising children’s ability to thrive. They currently are looking to recruit a Chair for the Board of Trustees, who can take on the following key responsibilities:
- Chair meetings of the trustee board
- Develop the board and guide it in helping the scheme manager set the strategic direction for the scheme
- Ensure that the Board of Trustees provides due oversight and governance
- Supporting and supervising the scheme manager and acting as a channel of communication between board and staff
The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a trustee and strong leadership skills to support the scheme manager to lead an organisation during a period of considerable change. Board meetings take place approximately 7 times a year on Monday evenings. There are also strategy setting afternoons which take place twice a year. Currently all meetings are taking place online. In between meetings the commitment is around 2- 3 days a month. Please let us know if you would like to find out more about this.
Thank you so much for your continued support.
We referred 40 volunteers last week, and the services send you all huge thanks. Please encourage your friends and neighbours to sign up too at https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/forms/volunteer-to-help-your-community.
