Tackling climate change, building a green recovery
Today we have launched the Lambeth Climate Action Hub. It's a website for residents, business and community groups to share projects, experiences, ideas and solutions to build a cleaner and greener local environment.
If you're involved in a great local project, or are concerned about the impact of climate change in Lambeth - check out the site and leave a comment about your experiences. Once we're able to host it safely, they'll be shared with the Lambeth Citizen's Assembly on Climate Change!
£90million investment to tackle the climate crisis
As part of the councils capital investment programme, announced last week, we have committed millions of pounds to tackle climate change and support sustainable travel. The investment includes £40million to support active travel with new infrastructure to make it safe to walk and cycle, such as redesigning streets with more, safer crossings and protected bike lanes for people cycling.
The package also includes funding for:
- More low traffic neighbourhoods
- secure bike hangar storage, especially on housing estates
- the electrification of our vehicle fleet
- green and sustainable drainage to protect from flooding
- decarbonising our energy supply with support for renewables
- measures to increase recycling
Just announced - £50 vouchers to get your bike back on the road!
The government has just announced a new voucher scheme for anyone with an unused bike that is in need of repair. You can apply for a £50 voucher to get it tuned up and ready to ride.

Dr Bike - free bike servicing and repairs
Get your bike checked and keep it roadworthy with our FREE Dr Bike sessions taking place across the borough. Bring your bike to our team of professional mechanics who will look it over and check tyres, brakes, gears etc. If it needs fixing and they can do it in the allotted time they will, free of charge!

Bike Buddies - build your confidence on the road
Are you a new or returning cyclist feeling a little nervous about cycling?
Lambeth Cyclists are starting a free “bike buddies” scheme to support more people to take to two (or three) wheels. The scheme puts new riders in touch with experienced riders nearby, so that they can meet up and ride together, and exchange a few tips.

Bike lessons for kids
Lots of pupils missed out on Bikeability sessions in school this year, due to coronavirus. In order to fill the gap, Sustrans is offering cycle sessions in Lambeth, throughout the last week of August. The aim of these sessions is to develop cycling confidence at a pace that suits your child. Sessions are intended for pupils who know how to ride a bike at a basic level (they can pedal without stabilisers).

And for adults too – online or on-road!
Lambeth will be offering 1-2-1 adult training from August after TfL announced special funding. This will help to equip fabulous new and returning cyclists with the skills needed to navigate London’s roads and to help them find suitable routes. For more information visit Cycle Confident's website.

Want to help your community cycle more?
Cycling UK's Community Cycle club programme provides training and support to groups who want to be able to put-on cycling activities. They provide small grants and training to enable community groups to deliver social group cycle rides, fix bikes and help others to cycle.
They are holding weekly parents and children sessions at the Loughborough Community Centre at Max Roach. Every Wednesday morning (10-12am) of the summer holidays, starting on 29th July.

More cycle hangar spaces coming to Lambeth
20 new cycle hangars are being installed around the borough this July to allow residents to safely and securely store their bikes. Taking up half of one car parking space, each hangar holds six bikes.
We anticipate that a further 25 hangars will be installed in 2020, providing more than 270 spaces (on top of the 1,200 spaces already installed) making it easier for our residents to make the choice to travel sustainably.

Making school journeys safer
Lambeth has announced an ambitious programme of new child-friendly School Streets to make it safe for pupils to walk, cycle or scoot to school while also maintaining social distancing outside the school gates.
Following two established schemes at Immanuel St Andrew’s Primary and Jessops Primary school, our plans include timed road closures to reduce traffic around schools and to ensure local people have safe and accessible transport options to make the school run. School Streets are planned at school sites all over Lambeth from next term in September.
