Lambeth Council will light up the Town Hall in purple tonight to mark the tragic death of George Floyd in the city of Minnesota, USA.
Mr. Floyd was clearly a victim of police brutality. We at Lambeth Made were horrified by the images we saw and are committed, now more than ever, to fighting inequality and injustice wherever it rears its ugly head #BlackLivesMatter
We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted inequalities in Lambeth. Evidence is emerging of the disproportionate impact on BAME communities. Black and ethnic minority people are more likely to die of the virus and are experiencing the economic impact of the lockdown disproportionately. The council has committed to finding out why this is and discussing the next steps with the community.
Worries have also been expressed about how policing operates, especially at this difficult time. The council has committed to listening to communities across Lambeth and responding to their concerns. Cllr Jacqui Dyer said, “As part of our community listening event later this month we want to hear from our residents anything that will support our ongoing work to improve the policing and safety of our borough."

World Response
Lambeth's action reflects the feelings of large sections of society, which have united in condemnation of the appalling actions of the police at the scene of Mr Floyd's arrest, but also in recognition of the huge injustices faced by black communities in the US.
The music industry has responded with the worldwide #theshowmustbepaused campaign and many media groups are recognising #blackouttuesday. Many sports men and women have also demonstrated their feelings, including the squad of Liverpool F.C. photographed taking knee during training yesterday. These actions are symbolic of the revulsion we must all feel.

Lambeth United
Cllr Jack Hopkins, Leader of Lambeth Council has reaffirmed the role of the council and the community in seeking justice for all.
Announcing the decision to light up the Town Hall, Cllr Hopkins said today, "The death of Mr Floyd highlights the huge injustices faced by black communities in the US, and we want to demonstrate our rejection of all such discrimination here in our part of London. As we light up the Town Hall purple today, we must re-double our commitment to make sure Lambeth remains united.”
