February is LGBTQ+ History Month and Lambeth Libraries are celebrating the history and achievement of the LGBTQ communities... and we have a challenge for you... How many LGBTQ writers have you read? You may have enjoyed Christopher Isherwood or Radclyffe Hall but have you tried some of the newer writers such as Will Eaves or Nicole Dennis-Benn? Along with Sheffield Libraries we have put together a List Challenge - see how many titles you've read and try something new for February.

We have some fantastic writers lined up for you during February including the writer of the 'Buzziest book of 2020'... over from America for a short time only... of course Kiley Reid is coming to Lambeth. Below are some of February’s event highlights for all ages…

Homosexuality: Power and Politics

Friday 14 February, 7pm. Brixton Library

After the leading organisations of 1970s radical sexual politics - the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Marxist Group - imploded or dissolved, the Gay Left Collective formed a research group to make sense of the changing terrain of sexuality and politics writ large. This anthology combines the very best of their work, exploring masculinity and workplace organising, counterculture and disco, the survivals of Victorian morality and the onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis. For a copy of the book and to join the discussion please contact the library on 020 7926 1056.

Snow Q - Live literature

Snow Q

Snow Q

Friday 21 February, 7pm.
Clapham Library

Snow Q is a re-imagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s much-loved fable, The Snow Queen, combining poetry, original music and visuals. This live literature performance was inspired by Andersen’s enigmatic tale of friendship, love and loyalty to explore contemporary themes of social isolation, gender, sexuality, migration and exile.

At the centre of Snow Q are lifelong friends Gerda and Kai, two lost young people. When winter comes, ice enters Kai’s heart and when Kai disappears, Gerda embarks on a quest to rescue their lost friend, meeting a wise, at times acerbic, Crow who tells stories in an extraordinary hybrid language of English and Polish.

Snow Q is touring in February
Tickets on sale now - £5 (+ booking fee) more on the door. Age 13+. Approx running time 60 mins, followed by discussion.

Sunil Gupta and Charan Singh

Exhibition: Sunil Gupta and Charan Singh: Dissent and Desire Art Exhibition

Monday 3 to Thursday 27 February, Library opening hours.
Brixton Library

Dissent and Desire is an attempt to speak to the void that continues to exist in representations of India, and which poses a threat to the larger questions of democracy and freedom. So, for us the question was why and what it is we would like to create through our photographic project that could portray its subjects with dignity and sincerity. Their everyday lives may seem banal at first, but they exposit how people negotiate family and society. Join Sunil and Charan for the exhibition launch Thursday 13 February, 6pm

For further information contact Rossella Black T: 020 7926 1661.
