Lambeth launches consultation on children’s centre changes

As you are signed up to our 'early years' email list, we want to share an important consultation on changes to children's centres with you.

Have your say on our proposals

Lambeth council has launched a consultation into the future of children’s centres in the borough. The consultation sets out how we have worked to protect children’s centres despite a significant cut of £1.4 million in our funding from central government.

Continuing cuts and funding changes from central government are forcing us to make some changes to the way children’s centres are run in the borough.

Despite the £1.4 million reduction in funding from central government, we are proposing to maintain 18 centres grouped into six cluster areas, and in each cluster area there will be one lead provider responsible for delivering the services across the children’s centres. The lead provider will employ a team of staff including Better Start workers who will provide one to one support for families living in the area who need additional help.

For the five other centres, we are working with schools and communities to try and ensure that no building actually closes and that as many services as possible continue there, such as free childcare for eligible two-year-olds and free nursery places for three-year-olds.

The consultation closes on 10th February 2019.

Our financial challenge

Like all local councils across the country, Lambeth has a massive financial challenge. Due to central government cuts, we need to save £43million pounds over the next four years. That’s on top of the £230million we’ve had to save since 2010, and it's more than £300 per household in Lambeth.

We've produced a video which explains our financial challenge - take a look below.
