Many members of the local community came to our briefing at St Paul's Church about the upcoming demolition of Bishop's Court and Holme Park Court, former council housing flats.
It was fantastic to see nearly 100 neighbouring residents come together to hear more about the project, ask questions, and share concerns. We hope the session helped to put some of your minds at ease by offering clarity on the plans, timelines, safety measures, and what you can expect over the coming months.
Following the interim repairs policies approved earlier this year, we're now developing our long-term housing policies, and we want your input.
Consultation events start in May, with different ways to take part:
- Online workshops
- Online surveys
- In-person sessions at libraries, community centres and other venues across Kirklees
Choose a time that suits you: morning, afternoon or evening sessions available. Your feedback has already helped shape real improvements. This is another chance to make your voice heard.
We're looking for tenants to join scrutiny panels on topics such as complaints, high-rise blocks, and the development of policies and services.
These panels give you the chance to share your views and give direct feedback to the Council on the issues that matter most to you. Meetings will be arranged with consideration of tenants' availability and accessibility.
Out and about with our caretakers
Our estate caretaking teams work hard to keep shared spaces clean, safe and well-maintained across Kirklees.
Recently, the Dalton team got together for a team day, clearing pathways, tidying communal areas and tackling fly-tipping around local estates.
It's all part of the work that goes on behind the scenes to keep your neighbourhoods looking their best. A big thank-you to the team for everything they do.
Spotted something that needs attention? Let us know.
This week is Electrical Fire Safety Week which highlights the importance of making sure electrical appliances, fittings and wirings are in good working condition and working properly. We would like to highlight some of the work we have been doing, and have put together some useful tips.
It's National Apprenticeship Week this month, and we're celebrating by shining a spotlight on our Pre-Apprenticeship Programme.
If you or someone you know is aged 16 to 18 and interested in a career in construction or trades, this free programme could be your first step. You'll gain:
- A Level 2 Multi-skills qualification with Kirklees College (joinery, plastering, plumbing, electrical, painting & decorating, tiling, brickwork)
- Six weeks of work experience
- Employability skills training and interview support
- Help applying for apprenticeships when you complete the programme
Council tenants and household members get priority for places. If you receive benefits, this programme won't affect your income.
Looking for free and low-cost ways to keep the kids busy? Our new On Our Doorstep campaign brings together activities, events and places to visit across Kirklees, all in one place.
You’ll find:
-
Family activities in libraries, community centres and local venues
-
Ideas for outdoor adventures and exploring nature
-
Museums, crafts and creative sessions
-
Support with Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) for children who receive free school meals
It’s all about helping families discover what’s happening close to home, without spending a fortune.
February can be a tough time for many households. With everyday costs staying high, it’s normal to feel under pressure or worry about money.
Our Money Advice Team is here to help with:
- Checking what benefits or grants you might be entitled to
- Making a realistic plan for bills and rent
- Advice on reducing energy costs
- Support with debt and managing arrears
The team offers free, confidential advice, and you don’t need to be in debt to get support. Sometimes a quick chat can make all the difference.
The days are getting longer, and there are little signs of spring popping up across Kirklees. We spotted these cheeky squirrels at Oakwell Hall and in Huddersfield town centre, busy preparing for warmer days ahead.
Things to look out for this month:
-
Snowdrops: often the first flowers to appear, sometimes as early as January
-
Tweets: listen out for robins and song birds warming up for spring
-
Longer evenings: by the end of February, sunset is after 5:30pm!
