 Reading Dens
Finding the perfect spot to settle down with a great book is wonderful! We'd like you to create your very own extra special spot. Armed with some very simple bits and pieces (and your imagination) you will soon have somewhere custom-built for your reading adventure.
We have two fantastic book bundles to give away to the lucky winners of our reading den competition. Just send us a photo of your fabulous reading den to lal@kirklees.gov.uk, let us know if you'd like to win the bundle for age 4-7/ age 7-11 and which library you'd like to collect it from by Friday 28th November.
Look at our Reading Dens page in the latest Library Adventures activity pack for inspiration!
 Brix and Blox
Up for a challenge? The children at our library Lego clubs have been inspired by our Library Adventures activity pack to get busy building! If you've built something extraordinary, we'd love to feature it on our Brix & Blox page. We will be picking three fantastic builds to star on the page each time and their creators will win a brilliant book each. Submit a photo of your creation to lal@kirklees.gov.uk and don't forget to include your name and age.
There are free Lego clubs in many of our libraries. Find out what's going on in a library near you on the Creative Kirklees website.
 Non-fiction November
Children and young people who read non-fiction were motivated to read for educational purposes, to satisfy curiosities, to foster social connections and to support their mental wellbeing (National Literacy Trust).
We're celebrating the joy and value of factual reading for young readers in all our libraries this November - and all year round. This year, the theme is ‘Past Puzzles and Timeless Treasures’, which invites pupils to explore history, archaeology, legends and the evolution of places and objects over time.
Celebrate with us by dropping into your local library to choose an irresistible information book or download a non-fiction ebook or factual audio book for free with the Libby app. Don't forget to complete the non-fiction November library trail and work out if the "facts" in the Library Adventures booklet are True or Poo!
Find out more about non-fiction November on the National Literacy Trust's website or explore the recommended titles from Books for Topics.

 Great Books Guide
The brilliant team at BookTrust have created a marvellous list of 100 books from 2025–26 that we think are great – and so will children! Like BookTrust, we love to get children excited about books, stories and rhymes because if reading is fun, children will want to do it. That’s why we want to share their guide full of books that are absolutely brilliant, carefully chosen to engage and excite children from 4 to 11. We believe that the ‘right’ book is always the book a child wants to read – and we hope this guide inspires you to find that book in one of our libraries.
Explore the booklists and enter the competition to win all 100 books for your school on the BookTrust website.
National Year of Reading 2026 - GO ALL IN
Everyone knows the benefits of reading: it expands your world, sharpens your mind. It might even make you more creative or successful. But increasingly, fewer of us are making time to read. With so many forms of entertainment at our fingertips, reaching for a book can feel like a chore. Something we should do, but don’t really want to do.
We're partnering with the National Year of Reading in 2026, bringing reading to where culture is. We believe reading is a powerful plug-in to the things you already love – a great way to go deeper into your existing passions. Put simply we say: ‘if you’re into it, read into it’.
The nation is being asked to Go All in and see how reading in all its forms can unlock more of what you love – whether it’s music, baking, family time, films, sci-fi or… anything.
Whatever you're into.
Get ready to GO ALL IN.
Watch the inspiring video and find out more on the GO ALL IN webpage.
 World Nursery Rhyme Week: 10th - 14th November 2025
Nursery rhymes aren’t just catchy tunes—they’re little learning powerhouses! 🎶 From “Twinkle Twinkle” to “The Wheels on the Bus,” these playful songs help kids soak up new words, build their language skills, and get a head start on reading. They even sneak in some early math magic with counting and rhythm. Plus, singing and moving along helps little ones grow socially, emotionally, and physically. Who knew so much brain-boosting could come from a simple rhyme?
We're celebrating World Nursery Rhyme week in our library storytimes and rhymetimes. Come along, join in, and collect your free Pocketful of Rhymes booklet.
Find the full list of library storytimes and rhymetimes on the Creative Kirklees website.

Playing with Words
A funny food poetry competition
"Food is funny. Food is funny when it's too horrible, too nice or too much. It's funny when someone makes a noise eating it, or when people eat food in bed. Food is funny when people talk about food and when they complain about food. So, let's write about food, what it looks like, what it tastes like, what we look like when we eat it, what people say about food! Let's write poems we can eat!" MICHAEL ROSEN
Inspired by Michael Rosen’s brilliant poem "Hot Food: Nice!", Walker Books are challenging you to write your own funny food poem. Whether it’s about spine-tingling spaghetti, carrots from outer space or monsters who eat marmalade, your poem just needs to do two things: 1. Be creative and 2. Be funny!
Find out more on the Michael Rosen Day website from Walker Books.
