South Asian Heritage Month

South Asian Heritage Month banner

South Asian Heritage Month takes place annually from July 18 to August 17. It seeks to celebrate and raise the profile of British South Asian heritage and history in the UK through education, arts, culture and commemoration. Now in its third year, the month is packed full of cultural events taking place across the UK. Join Kirklees Libraries in celebration of this colourful month.


Kirklees Libraries will be hosting an array of events and workshops in partnership with the local Sangam festival over this coming summer. Information on all the events can be found at

Peter Chand has enthralled audiences both near and far with his skilfully told tales. He is one of Europe’s most renowned storytellers and is in constant demand for his powerful, evocative and moving stories from the Indian subcontinent

Arabic Calligraphy practical workshop and lecture

Arabic calligraphy tools

In this very special one-off event, Razwan will lecture on the fascinating Arabic Calligraphy of South Asia, from its beginnings in the Arab world to its movement East. He will also lead a traditional Arabic calligraphy session, using hand mixed ink and hand cut bamboo pens. From beginners to advanced, all levels are welcome, from teen to adult.

The girl of the title is Nora Beady, ward of Dr. Horace Croft, a brilliant and eccentric London surgeon. Nora is intelligent, independent, and possessed of a natural talent for medicine and medical illustration. Dr. Croft has trained her to work as his assistant, but her role must be kept secret; although the book's setting, the mid-19th-century medical field, is in the process of evolving, it still has no role for women, except as nurses.

Overdrive / Libby: Accessibility Features

Start-ups, innovators, small businesses or anyone with a business idea can now visit the new Business and Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC) at Dewsbury Library.

This service is part of the British Library’s network of over 100 library based BIPCs across England. Support comes from Leeds City Region BIPC and offers access to current market research reports, business information resources and online databases.
