Pam's Poem

A Poem By Pam

Hope you enjoyed that. Bit of a different way to start the newsletter this month, but Pam is one of our team of dedicated volunteers and this poem is hot off the press and so uplifting, and well, we couldn't resist sharing a bit of joy!

Thanks Pam and thanks to the wonderful pupils and Mrs Mellor from Meltham CofE School for providing the inspiration for this poem!

Book Review

There Once Is A Queen - front cover image

You just know it's going to be a great book when it is, what we like to call, a "Double Michael"...written by Sir Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman.

This book does not disappoint, "There Once is a Queen" tells the story of our Queen and longest reigning Monarch (longest reigning female Monach in history ever!). It begins with Elizabeth as a young Princess, planting an oak tree with her father and journeys throughout her life, through all the changes in her family, our country and the wider world.  Sir Michael's poetic text is perfectly complimented by Michael's beautiful watercolours. This is a lovely book to share together, or curl up on the sofa on your own and immerse yourself in 70 years worth of stories!

You can borrow a physical copy from our libraries, or read or listen to it online with our Ebook and Eaudio versions.

Refugee Week

Jo Loring-Fisher holding her book, Just Like You

Why not spend some time during Refugee week - 20th-26th June- (or any other time!) sharing books about refugees and their stories? Jo Loring-Fisher's beautiful picture book, "Just Like You" (which we have physical copies of in our libraries) introduces us to a young girl who comes to a new school in a new country, she has been on a long journey, but she is just like you. You can watch our Jo Loring-Fisher -"Just Like You" Library Adventures Live! (LAL!) session, where Jo will read the book, lead a draw along and tell you about what it is like to be an illustrator.

Taking Time Storywalks

Taking time to imagine the deep sounds of the sea.

Taking time to cherish you . . . and cherish me.”

Jo Loring-Fisher’s beautiful picture book Taking Time is the inspiration for our half-term storywalks. Children and their families are invited to share the story with us in the library before setting off together to find the illustrations.

Empathy Day LAL!+

Image of Yurong and her book

Thursday 9th June is Empathy Day and we are very excited to be celebrating it with a special LAL!+ at 11am with 2022 Greenaway shortlisted illustrator Yurong.  She will be reading "Shu Lin's Grampa" - Matt Goodfellow's subtle tale about new starts, new schools, standing out, fitting in and acceptance. Yurong will explain how her illustrations bring the characters to life and compliment the text by using simple drawing and papercutting techniques to show a range of expressions and attitudes which really help the reader empathise with the characters. Yurong will also talk about how traditional Chinese paper cutting has influenced her work and she'll even show us how to make them.

If you have a question for Yurong, please email it in to us at lal@kirklees.gov.uk or type questions live in the Facebook and Youtube chat on the day.

Don't forget that you can watch any of our previous Adventures again via our website whenever you like and there are many that would be perfect to watch together to explore themes of empathy.
