We all want to live somewhere clean and tidy...

fly tipping pile

From new CCTV cameras to prosecutions, as the council we're doing all we can to reduce the amount of flytipping in Kirklees but some people still think it's okay to dump their rubbish on public land. And it's definitely not, we're sure you'll agree.

So what if everyone else worked together to stop it? There's a few simple things you can do which could make all the difference and leave us with a cleaner Kirklees.

1. Be suspicious of a 'good deal' to take your rubbish away

People who run 'businesses' to get rid of other people's rubbish are amongst the worst offenders of flytipping. This means that the person you found on Facebook who said they'd get rid of your old sofa for £20 may well have driven it 3 miles down the road and dumped it. And legally you could still be held responsible and fined by us. Don't let this happen to you - check that anyone taking your rubbish has a waste carrier license.

2. Be a nosey neighbour

Nosey neighbour

One of the best ways for us to successfully catch people is by using information from local residents or passers-by.  Flytipping can be reported online in less than 5 minutes and the more information we have, the more likely it is that we can stop them doing it in the future. Please try and tell us:

  • Where and when it happened
  • What was tipped
  • The registration number of any vehicle involved
  • Any premises which the flytipper came out of or went into
  • A description of the person (s) who were tipping.

Report fly tipping

3. Know where things go - and tell other people

Grey and green bins are collected fortnightly and our household waste and recycling centres are open 7 days a week. We can also collect bulky items for a small fee if you don't have transport.

Knowing what goes where can seem like a minefield so we've created a handy  A-Z on our website. Please help by sharing the link with friends, family and in any local Facebook groups you belong to. Not knowing where something goes shouldn't be an excuse for dumping it in a park, so let's work together to make sure everyone has this information.
