Islington recycles

What happens to your recycling?
We're often asked 'what happens to my recycling?'
The North London Waste Authority manages the recycling that we collect. All of your mixed recycling goes to a sorting facility in Edmonton where it is sorted and sent for recycling, and there's lots of information on their website about where your recycling goes.
For example, did you know that all plastic bottles are sent to facilities in the UK to be turned into new plastic products?
And food waste is sent to anaerobic composting facilities in Hertfordshire and Surrey to produce biogas for electricity production and fertiliser for local farms.
Check out the NLWA website for more information on what happens to your recycling.

Recycling in Islington Life
Have you seen our recycling work in IslingtonLife? Some of the improvements we've carried out as part of the Thriving Neighbourhoods programme were featured in IslingtonLife in January.
Watch out for the next edition where we'll be 'talking rubbish', all about how we're trying to improve recycling in Islington.
Watch out for the food waste muncher!
Have you seen our brand new Food Waste Muncher? Our new 100% electric food waste recycling vehicle is out on the streets now collecting from estates and schools.
Local primary school children named Islington’s newest food waste vehicle as part of a campaign to boost food waste recycling rates in the borough.
Pupils at The Gower School entered Islington Council’s competition that aimed to encourage children to get involved in creating a greener, healthier borough. Our Recycling Champions voted on their favourite from a shortlist, and the Food Waste Muncher won!
The children and the new vehicle will also be gracing the cover of the IslingtonLife spring magazine, which will be landing on doorsteps across Islington from March.
Need a recycling container?
