August bank holiday bin collection changes

Bin collections in Islington over bank holidays now take place a day later than usual.

This means that collections that would normally take place on Monday 30 August will occur a day later. All collections throughout next week will also be a day later than usual, so Tuesday collections will take place on Wednesday, Wednesday on Thursday, and so on. We will collect normal Friday waste and recycling on Saturday.

Residents who live on a main road with daily sack collections will not be affected.

Bank holiday travel

If you’re planning on getting out and about over the bank holiday, it is best to check your journey as there are a number of planned road closures and changes to travel services.

In Finsbury Park, Stroud Green Road, next to the station, will be closed from 6am on Saturday 28 August until 5pm on Sunday 29 August as Network Rail continues with work to improve accessibility for passengers at the station.

In Old Street, Old Street West and City Road South will be temporarily closed while TfL adjust the lanes on Old Street roundabout. The work will take place from Friday 27 August to Tuesday 31 August, including through the night.

Check TfL’s website for details of changes to rail travel this weekend including tube, overground, DLR and Tram services. For major rail engineering work happening, also see Network Rail’s website

Working together for Islington

Islington has a wide and diverse range of skills and talents. We want everyone to have an opportunity to reach their potential, as we build a fairer economy for everyone.

There is lots of help and support available for you if you are looking to improve your job prospects.

Islington Council and the iWork team offer support finding work and links to local organisations.

We’re also here to help young adults ages 16-24. Our dedicated youth employment support page is a great starting point for careers advice and finding the best help available to you.

Resettlement for Afghan households

The council has pledged to help and accommodate up to 15 households from Afghanistan in response to the humanitarian crisis.

We will work closely with the local community, our voluntary sector, schools and health services to ensure Afghan refugees get the support they need to recover from the trauma they have experienced, and start rebuilding their lives.

Our pledge

Activities for children and young people

Thousands of children and young people in Islington have been expanding their horizons thanks to our summer activities programme.

The council’s SummerversityAccess to SportsHeatwave and Bright Start programmes have proved a huge success, with a higher attendance this year than in any previous summer.

The wide range of activities and workshops on offer includes cooking, archery, athletics, poetry, yoga, football, music production, fashion, website building and much more. Young people have also had opportunities to focus on their future careers, attending courses as varied as carpentry, social media, farming and business.

Finsbury Park bridge gets a makeover

Network Rail has carried out work to the Seven Sisters bridge with a fresh coat of paint and the addition of 150cm red ‘Finsbury Park’ lettering.

The sign will act as a welcome for visitors to the area as well as residents and businesses. It will help Finsbury Park’s identity and provide a prominent landmark.

Have your say on Islington’s polling districts and stations

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has completed its Electoral Review and decided that the number of wards in Islington should increase from 16 to 17.

As a result of this, we’re currently reviewing our polling districts and the location of polling stations within them for use at both national and local elections, and we’d like to hear your thoughts on the proposals. The last day to have your say on the polling district and station review is 20 September.
