High Alert: Coronavirus cases are on the rise – act now to protect your family

Coronavirus is on the rise again in London according to the latest data and, worryingly, that includes amongst the at-risk over 60s.

Professor Kevin Fenton, London’s regional director for Public Health England, says: "Covid-19 behaves like clockwork - the more contact we have with others, the higher the chance of us catching or spreading the virus."

As we look ahead to Christmas, and start to think about whether it is safe to see our loved ones then, it’s vital we all act now to prevent a big surge in cases in London. If that happens, tighter restrictions will inevitably follow. At present Islington is in Tier 2 – High Alert. That means you must follow these rules:

  • No household mixing indoors – do not meet with people from outside your household (or support bubble) indoors at any time, whether at home or in a public place, including in restaurants, pubs and places of worship.
  • Sticking with six outdoors – do not meet in groups of more than six people at any time outdoors, and try to limit the number of people you see socially over a short period.
  • Reducing travel - where possible.
  • Washing your hands - regularly and for at least 20 seconds.
  • Wearing a face-covering - in public places, including in shops, on public transport and at the school gates.
  • Creating space – stay 2 metres apart from people outside your household.

More information about the restrictions is available at gov.uk

If you have Covid symptoms, get tested now. NHS.uk/coronavirus or call 119

Get tested

Check your symptoms – if you start to develop any coronavirus symptoms – a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your taste or smell – make sure you self-isolate and book a test.

Two Covid-19 testing sites are now open in Islington – after calls from Islington Council to make it easier for local people to get tests. Walk-through testing centres in the car park of the Sobell Centre and at Finsbury Leisure Centre are open from 8am-8pm, seven days a week, and must be booked in advance online, through the NHS app, or by dialling 119.

Social contact restrictions are due to be eased between 23-27 December to allow up to three households to spend time together in private homes, to attend places of worship, or meet in a public outdoor place.

When you're making plans for Christmas, consider the risk of coronavirus to you and your family. Coronavirus spreads more quickly in indoor settings than outdoors, and shared utensils or board games, and surfaces like door handles and kettles, can also spread this invisible disease.

The best gift you could give your loved ones this year might be not to see them. Could you celebrate Christmas in other ways, like using technology and meeting outdoors.
