Update on people-friendly streets

We recently announced that Clerkenwell Green and Canonbury West will become home to the next two people-friendly streets neighbourhoods, creating greener, safer, more pleasant streets for all. Work in these neighbourhoods will start this week, with work on a new cycleway stretching from Finsbury Park to Pentonville also set to resume this week after it was halted due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Coronavirus has had a huge impact on us all, and life will not be the same once the crisis ends. The message from Government has been clear – local authorities must swiftly adapt their streets to create more space for walking, cycling and social distancing and avoid a dangerous rise in motor vehicle traffic as we move out of lockdown.

People-friendly streets will improve the air local people breathe, be safer and more pleasant, and better suited for social distancing as they will help make it easier to walk, cycle, use buggies and wheelchairs.

The schemes are being introduced as trials and residents will be formally consulted after 12 months but you can give us your views now on our plans, and other traffic issues in your area, on our Commonplace website.

School streets

School Streets programme doubles

A further 16 Islington schools now have School Streets, creating a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for children as they return to the classroom.

School Streets reduce traffic outside the borough’s schools at drop-off and pick-up times, creating quieter, more-pleasant roads for children, with cleaner air. They also encourage active travel, enabling young people and parents to stay physically active and healthy as they travel to and from school.

Test and trace – what you need to do

The NHS Test and Trace service has been introduced so we can return to normal life as quickly as possible, in a way that protects us all. The service enables people with coronavirus symptoms to get tested and if they have the virus, the NHS will trace the people they’ve been in contact with so that they can self-isolate too. If you think you may have coronavirus symptoms, contact the NHS coronavirus service for advice.

In the meantime, don't forget to:

  • Wash your hands for 20 seconds regularly
  • Keep a social distance of 2 metres
  • Wear a mask in shops and on public transport
  • If you have Covid-19 symptoms, get tested and stay at home

Protect your friends and family. Keep Islington Safe.
